Here's a tricky and maybe multi-layer question.

Got an HP Pavilon. Had it for several years now. Lately, it's been acting quirky. Main thing it's doing is that it won't boot up sometimes.

It will start booting, then I will get a black screen with the cursor blinking in the upper left-hand corner. SOMETIMES, I can alleviate this problem by hitting ESC and booting from the boot menu.

Other times (like this AM - took me 1.5 hours to get it booted), it's start spinning and processing and I can get only so far and then the spinning/processing just abruptly stops, and the screen goes black (no cursor on screen).

Wondering what it is....

Once I get it up, it seems to be fine, with sometimes running sluggishly, and I'll have to reboot to "wipe it clean." I can't figure out what the heck it's processing!!!!

Got any ideas???

(I've run Malware, Ad-Aware, CC, and ATF - CLEAN)

Can you boot into safe mode by hitting F8 after the post screen?

I tried it this morning, and it booted up fine, and it didn't shut back down. So, thinking it must be fine, I rebooted into normal mode, and guess what? DUH--it happened to me again.

Just trying to pick the brain of this thing and see what's hanging it up.

When was the last time that you have physically cleaned the computer?
