I have a computer in a remote office that has random ad's playing on the speakers, pop up IE windows and IE script errors. I have ran MalwareBytes, CA AntiVirus, and SpyBot. Here is the recent HijackThis log from the computer:

  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until Iíve given you the ďAll clear.Ē Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Any underlined text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
Posted Image Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries


If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs
  • GMER log

It looks like you've run ComboFix on this PC. While you may see ComboFix being used quite often, the tool should not be run unsupervised (as stated in the Disclaimer that is first displayed by ComboFix when you run the tool) Going forward, I highly recommend you heed such instructions.

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

  • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • aswMBR log

Please do this next:

Posted Image Download TDSSKiller.zip and extract TDSSKiller.exe to your desktop
  • Execute TDSSKiller.exe by doubleclicking on it.
  • Press Start Scan
  • If Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected. Important - If there is no option to "Cure" it is critical that you select "Skip"
  • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Once complete, a log will be produced in c:\. It will be named for example, TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_24.07.2010_13.10.52_log.txt
  • Post that log, please.
Posted Image You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM
  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Uncheck any entries from C:\System Volume Information or C:\Qoobox
  • Make sure that everything else is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

  • TDSSKiller log
  • MBAM log

I cannot run the app, I double click and nothing. Nothing running in Task Manager. I also turned off my Anti Virus.

Posted Image aswMBR place two files on your desktop. We need the one called MBR.dat. Right click on that file and select Send to >> Compressed (zipped) folder. Add the newly created zipped folder as an attachment to your next post.

Your PC is infected with a rootkit, one that is attached to the Master Boot Record (MBR) of your hard disk. We usually have a good amount of success when it comes to fixing the MBR but the MBR is a delicate area and there is a possibility of data loss and/or have complete PC failure if the disinfection process does not work. Please back up any important data before proceeding.

Please also understand that some PCs have their own proprietary MBR that offer you the ability to boot directly into a Factory Restore Utility. Fixing this proprietary MBR can cause you to lose the ability to boot into the Factory Restore Utility.

Please look over these instructions before you begin and let me know in advance if you have any questions or concerns.

Posted Image Earlier on ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. We're going to use that now. Please print and read the instructions and ask any questions you have before you start:

Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.
If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter

It will then prompt you for the Administrator's password. If there is no password, simply press enter. Otherwise type in the password and then press enter.

Next type FIXMBR

If it ask if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'

Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.
