Following help in the Am I infected? forum I have been directed here for further help. Its safe to say my laptop is infected. Topic referenced is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic394937.html ~ OB

My original post was as follows to highlight the main problems:

I believe my laptop has been infected with a number of problems. Any assistance would be truly helpful. Problems observed so far include:

1. Audio type adverts running in the background sporadically.
2. Some re-directing from searches, a site called scour was opening but this has mainly cleared up. However various other redirecting issues have occured.

3. Lots of internet explorer post script error messages, usually with a strange webite address in them. Message asks if i should continue running scripts? I don't use IE a great deal usually google chrome or firefox.

4. Vista total secutity 2011 was trying to or did install itself and highlighting prolems. This may have cleared up.
5. strange proc: click messages following google searches.

Foolishly a file sharing program MediaGet was installed, I fear this may be to blame. I am having trouble removing this.

I have always had symantec av installed however for the last few weeks there has been a prolem with it,with windows installer requesting thesik which i no longer have. Should I unistall symantec and install something like microsoft securtiy essentials?

I have also had spybot installed for a number of years and have run scans. Some propblems were removed however one from Zango? remains which i can't remove.

I have now installed Malwarebytes. This cleared up a number of problems, however most of those detailed above are still occuring and further malwarebytes reveal no infections.I am very confused and slightly worried. Any suggestions to remedy my prolems would be most grateful.

Following help in the other forum section, a systemlook and Jottis check was run followed by an attempt to run DTSS which seems to be blocked by adware.

I have now followed the preparation steps and for this section and my logs are as follows/attached. My ark.txt file was too large to attach at 8.12MB. I guess this is a problem? Should I send it another way?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.

Thanks for the help.

A few more things for your information.

Months back my computer restarted and on rebooting a warning that my version of windows was non-genuine was displayed in the bottom corner. Windows vista cam pre installed from dell so i new this to be rubbish. I restarted and the message was gone but so too was my usual wallpaper. thought nothing more of it.

In the early stages of this current problem on rebooting all my desktop program shortcuts had disappeared. I run a system restore back a day or two and they came back.

On starting up i currently get a warning that windows defender has failed to initialize.

I have the vista DVD that was supplied with the laptop.

New DDS log is as follows
I have compressed the attach file and attached along with a non compressed version.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one ((Adobe Reader X + 10.0.1 update for it)) here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't (unless you want to) install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 25.
  • Click the
    Download
    button to the right.
  • Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck Carbonite online backup trial if it's offered there.

* Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is UNchecked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish.

Ok, I think i have followed all steps correctly.

I have not been experiencing so many problems. I haven't heard any ads in the background and the post script errors aren't popping up. However i still get a proc; clic box followed by redirecting when making google searches using google chrome browser.

Anyway here are the logs DDS and ESET below and the rest attached.

Thanks

Hi again,

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\System32\865a5.dll
Registry::
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FB314ED9-A251-47B7-93E1-CDD82E34AF8B}]

Save this as
CFScript

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Update MBAM and run a full scan with it. Post back the report.

Looks like its cleared up.

Tried various random searches with google, no proc clic messages or redirecting. No script errors or adverts either. I think its all cleared up.

Windows defender is failing to initialize if i try to open it but maybe this can be resolved.

Also i can't uninstall the Mediaget program i suspected may have caused the infection as it claims there is a file missing.

Similarly i cant uninstall Symantec and i keep getting requests for the cd on startup which i don't have.

These may be problems i can solve.

Can you recommend an AV program to run from now on. Microsoft Security Essentials sufficient. If so shall i download it. I would like to try and stay trouble free from now on.

Anyway thanks a million for all your help. If there is anything else i should do to complete the process please let me know.

RJ

Does it give any error message?

Also i can't uninstall the Mediaget program i suspected may have caused the infection as it claims there is a file missing.

Please try Revo Uninstaller.

Similarly i cant uninstall Symantec and i keep getting requests for the cd on startup which i don't have.

What happens when you try to uninstall Symantec? Please give AppRemover a try.

Microsoft Security Essentials is one good option. I'll give some further recommendation after we've got other issues sorted out first.

ok

Point 1

error message reads:

Application failed to intialize 0x80070006. The handle is invalid.

Point 2
Tried Revo
When it tries the program's built in unistaller i get the same message as when i've tried:
.

Messages file
"C:Users\Richard\Appdata\Local\MediaGet2\unins000.msg" is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the file.

Followed the next steps and i think its gone!

Point 3

Symantec removed using add/remove programs successfully.

Thanks

Hi,

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.
@ECHO OFF
REGEDIT /E "%userprofile%\desktop\Logit.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WinDefend"
DEL %0

Right click on fixes.bat file and select "run as administrator" to execute it. Logit.txt file should appear to your desktop. Attach it to your post.

Hi, how long does this take to work.

I have run the fixes.bat file twice. I get asked for permission to continue then not a lot happens. No sign of a logit.txt file though the fixes.bat file is removed form the desktop. Maybe i just need to wait a little.
