Hi Computer*Noob,

Sorry for the delay, we've really been swamped lately. If you still need help, please start out by posting a new log in this thread. Please describe what you may have done to fix the problem and what is happening with your system now (since you posted your last log).

One reason we're so swamped is because the Windows Metafile Vulnerability is being heavily exploited.

Also please visit Windows Update and apply ALL patches. This will help prevent reoccurance of malware that you can get from just clicking a certain link while we work on your system.

The fate of all mankind, I see

Is in the hands of fools

Hi again Computer*Noob,

I really need to see a new HijackThis log as stuff changes over time. Also please be sure to run the HijackThis scan in normal mode, not safe mode so we can be sure to catch as much as possible.

Please be more specific. Are you getting an error when you try to open HijackThis? Or what? Post back the exact error message if possible, if not give me a general idea of what it says.

Hello,

I'm sUBs. Papakid will be unavailable for the next few days. I shall be aiding you with your problem.

Are you able to load Windows in either mode - Safe/ Normal?

If you're able to boot into Safe Mode, please do a fresh HJT scan & post that log

Computer*Noob,

Do you have another name I can call you? Noob sounds demeaning. :thumbsup:

Allright, my main priority is to get you back to Normal Mode. Any malware issues would have to wait. You will need to download some tools using another PC & then transfer those tools via cd/thumbdrive to the laptop.

* * * * * *

Before doing anything else, there is something that requires your immediate intervention. I notice that you have more than one anti-virus programs on your machine (Kspersky, AntiVir & AVG). That's not a good idea!! Posted Image

This messes up the machine pretty badly. Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them.

ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:

re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall

* * * * * * ADDITIONAL DOWNLOADS * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Download & install - CleanUp.exe

Download & extract it to it's own folder - smitRem.exe

Download and install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options",
  • uncheck - Install background guard
.
Download Ewido's manual updates

'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet when you have finished downlaoding.
It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order.

* * * * * * FIXING ENTRIES WITH HIJACKTHIS * * * * * * * * * *

Do a HijackThis scan & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked":

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inet20001\winlogon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inet20001\winlogon.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.adorons.com
O20 - Winlogon Notify: msupdate - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll

* * * * * * DELETING FILES/FOLDERS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

If you have not done so already, please enable the viewing of Hidden files
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab.
  • Tick - 'Show hidden files and folder'
  • Untick - 'Hide file extensions for known types'
  • Untick - 'Hide protected operating system files'
  • Click Yes to confirm & then click OK
Locate and delete the following files/folders: (let me know if you fail to find/delete any)
  • C:\WINDOWS\inet20001\
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll
* * * * * * PURGING TEMP FOLDERS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider initially to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:
  • Delete Newsgroup cache
  • Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
6. Do NOT reboot/logoff if prompted.

* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

* * * * * * RUNNING ADDITIONAL SCANNERS * * * * * * * * * * *

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

* * * *

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website
Under the 'Web pages' box, Uncheck everything present.

* * * * *

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
  • "Perform action on all infections"
  • .Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete.

Reboot your machine once you have completed running Ewido

* * * * * * CHECK LIST * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

In your next post, please include copies of these logs:
  • HiJackThis log
  • Smitfiles.txt
  • Ewido's log

Before any more work can be done on this machine, there are several things that requires your intervention.

This machine is messed up pretty badly because you have several anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!! Posted Image

Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & produces undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them.

ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:

re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall

Please post a fresh HJT log when you're done

PS..Among all the programs on your machine, I'll keep Kaspersky & remove the rest

Fix this with HijackThis:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

Then perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  • Click Scan Now
  • Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

I would also require a fresh HJT log
