Hi,

I recently posted in the forms and was told to follow instructions on the preparation guide. I tried following the guide but often times, I was unable to. My problems regarding the logs are:

1. Although dds.scr downloads, my computer thinks its a Solidworks (a 3-D design software) script and every time I click it just produces a txt file with a bunch of gibberish.
2. Whenever I try to run gmer.exe, it crashes. The one time it didn't, I was told mid scan by windows that some 'host?' processes had stopped working. I am pasting to the end of this post what it did 'find' the one time it ran to completion.

Other problems I have include:

1. Spybot and Malwarebytes are not able to find any viruses after the first round removal of viruses (see attachments).
2. After booting maybe 5 minutes in, the computer fan starts spinning fast as a result of scvhost.exe taking up to 70-80% of the cpu and crashes the computer.
3. Redirects to ads from google searches
4. TDSSKiller.exe does not open past 80%

I've tried doing system restores to before when the viruses came and it seems to have no effect. My problem seems to be closely related to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic392645.html. I have also done several Malwarebytes scans recently that result in the detection of

I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Note: Attachment 3 depicts a file that I noticed was downloaded around the same time as I got the 'virus'. I have since manually deleted it.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

NEXT:

Running TDSSKiller

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

    Posted Image

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

    Posted Image

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

NEXT:

Running OTL

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

NEXT:

Please provide an update on how things are running in your next reply.

Have I helped you? If you'd like to assist in the fight against malware, click here Posted Image

The instructions seen in this post have been specifically tailored to this user and the issues they are experiencing with their computer. If you think you have a similar problem, please first read this topic, and then begin your own, new thread. I do not offer private support via Private Message.

Hi SweetTech,

Thank you so much for your reply. I am a college student an my computer is used literally everyday for schoolwork! Anyways, I downloaded and ran the programs you wanted me to run. Interestingly enough, last time when I had tried to download and run tdsskiller.exe by myself it always got stuck at 80% and went no further. However, this time, it went to completion.

The scvhost.exe problem did not occur yet but one aspect of the problem has gotten worse: When ever I use google, it always redirects to unrelated sites. This never used to happen before. Before, Mozilla would randomly open up a tab with the url containing text from a previous google search. That being said, do you think that a hacker is monitoring/ recording my keystrokes? I would like to reinstall windows but as I am in college now, I don't have access to my original cds so I am trying to fix the problem just by antispyware software/ your help. Therefore, if you think the problem is serious, I could get the CDs and pursue that option.

Once again thank you so much for your help! Also, I feel that I should tell you that in between my first posting and your reply, I got the blue screen a couple of times and found many viruses using the malwarebytes scanner in safe mode. I have attached screen shots of the viruses it found. Please let me know if you want to read the actual logs.

Hi chuck.f.axe!

No problem. TDSSKiller was able to run successfully this time because it was recently updated to deal with the latest variant of this infection (which just happens to be the one you had).

It's really difficult for me to say whether or not someone is monitoring your keystrokes. With malware anything is possible these days.

From your logs I can see that TDSSKiller has found the main culprit.

Before I declare my users clean, I do everything to ensure that they are clean. The only way to be 100% sure that the malware is gone is by performing a reformat and re-install.

I'm game either way. We can proceed with trying to clean-up your computer to hold you off until you can get a chance to reformat your computer when you get back from college.

I'll do my best to remove any malware I'm able to see from your logs,

Once again thank you so much for your help! Also, I feel that I should tell you that in between my first posting and your reply, I got the blue screen a couple of times and found many viruses using the malwarebytes scanner in safe mode. I have attached screen shots of the viruses it found. Please let me know if you want to read the actual logs.

Okay, thanks for that information, and you are welcome. :)

The main infection that you were infected with is called TDL4.

Running ComboFix
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

Hi SweetTech,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I have attached the logs you requested. Two quick questions/ comments though.

1. In your reply, I noticed that after the spybot directions there were two "Next:" instructions with nothing in them, so I just proceeded to the OTL Fix. I hope I didn't skip any important step.

2. As you might notice in the log text for combofix, I was unable to switch of McAfee Firewall because whenever I tried to open up the security center it would not load up. This is probably because my subscription to McAfee expired? (not sure)

Here are the LOGS:

Hi chuck.f.axe,

In your reply, I noticed that after the spybot directions there were two "Next:" instructions with nothing in them, so I just proceeded to the OTL Fix. I hope I didn't skip any important step.

Nope, there wasn't suppose to be anything in there. I didn't catch that typo when I posted it to you.

As you might notice in the log text for combofix, I was unable to switch of McAfee Firewall because whenever I tried to open up the security center it would not load up. This is probably because my subscription to McAfee expired? (not sure)

That's possible. McAfee can be a real pain to deal with. Are you looking to stay with McAfee or switch to something else?

I can recommend some exactly free Anti-Virus programs that will not take up nearly as much resources as McAfee will. Let me know.

Do you recognize these files?

ComboFix Script
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic394919.html/page__view__findpost__p__2238400
Collect::
c:\windows\system32\C_10000T.dll

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. If ComboFix prompts you to update to the newest version, please allow it to do so. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NEXT:

I would also like to see a list of files quarantined by ComboFix, so please do this:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A text file should open. Post the contents of that file in your next reply.

Hi SweetTech,

Thank you for your help.

I tried to follow your instructions but unfortunately ran into some problems this time around.

1. When I was running Combofix.exe, the McAfee Security Center warning that I wasn't protected popped up. I think I might have accidentally clicked on "close". After a few seconds, windows told me the PEV.exe had stopped working. Once again, I forgot and pressed the PrntScrn button so I could show you what happened. Anyways, anticipating the computer reboot, I took a picture of the screen and I have attached it to this post.

2. When the computer re-booted after the scan, once again the McAfee Security Center message popped up (I am not able to stop it). After the log popped up, I tried clicking on Firefox icon on my desktop and it gave me some warning about not being able to open it due to something being marked for deletion. (The something might have either been a dll or a driver. I'm sorry I don't remember the actual terminology). I immediately rebooted my computer, and Firefox started working again with no mention of the previous error.

Sorry if all this are symptoms of the "unpredictable results" you warned me of. I am unable to manage McAfee and since it isn't active, I would greatly appreciate your advice for replacement software and instructions for how to get rid of it once and for all.

By the way, the two files you asked me about, are copies of my resume. Just out of curiosity, were these infected? If so, how do .docx files even get infected?

Hi!

I wanted to respond to this thread before I signed off for the night.

Do you mind if I ask why you have your Resume.docx file in your Favorites folder? I ask because I'm not absolutely convinced that they are infected, and it maybe something that I need to report to the developer of ComboFix, so the more information I have the better off I'll be as to the best way to proceed.

Hi SweetTech,

Not at all - truth be told, I don't really have a good reason for it. I mean, if you are asking if I put it there, I have a strong feeling I did but am not 100% sure. If I did put it there, it was before I put a copy on my desktop and therefore, it was just a case of me being too lazy to scroll down and find resume.docx (which was in Documents or some other default folder) every time I had to modify it.

Either way, I have not accessed resume.docx from that location in a long time and have a more up to date copy on my desktop which I use more frequently. Just fyi, I also have older copies of my resume stored on my desktop in a folder labled Resumes.

Also, I tried clicking on my Favorites folder and notice that there are a bunch of folders that I definitely didn't put there like: MSN Websites, Dell, Links, Microsoft Websites and Windows Live. However, for all these folders, it lists the modified date as some date in the 2008s so maybe those were always there.

Hope this helps- sorry I couldn't remember the exact circumstances regarding the resume.docx file.

Hi!

Yeah, McAfee can be a real pain. I'm still looking into the Resume files.

Those files you mentioned being in the Favorites folder are ones that are placed there by Default by Microsoft.

Lets remove McAfee.

Remove McAfee Tool
Please download the McAfee removal tool from HERE
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Make sure all McAfee application windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe and the removal tool will start automatically.
  • Note: Windows Vista users must right-click and select Run as Administrator.
Once the removal tool is finished, you will be prompted to restart your computer. If you choose to restart later, your McAfee product will not be fully removed until you do.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.

No Anti-Virus Present

Looking over your log it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect cleans and erase harmful virus files on a computer
Web server or network.
Unchecked virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present and will clean delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors
  • Avira AntiVir Personal - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50000 viruses. Free support.
  • avast! 6 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Hi SweetTech,

Sorry, but I finally remember why I didn't uninstall McAfee earlier. My college requires some sort of pre-approved anti-virus software to be on the computer before you can connect to the internet. Thus even though it is deactivated, their scanner thinks I have it and thus allows me use the internet. I don't think the software you recommended is on their list. I plan on downloading one of your suggestions but still leaving McAfee installed. Is that okay? I will post the other logs you requested later today.

Hi SweetTech,

Help! A program called MS Removal Tool has installed itself on my computer and I am unable to get rid of it. I looked on the forums and found instructions on how to remove it but wanted to get your okay first.

I tried running Malwarebytes on safe mode but it didn't detect anything! Please let me know what to do and sorry if I caused lots more problems.

By the way, I am accessing the internet on safe mode with networking. Is that okay? Also, in the interim, I am holding off on downloading the anti-virus software you recommended.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi chuck.f.axe

I plan on downloading one of your suggestions but still leaving McAfee installed. Is that okay?

Yes, as long you only have one anti-virus running actively at a time.

Hi SweetTech,

So I tried to follow the instructions on the link you gave me but for some reason, Malwarebytes always comes up clean. Also, whenever I run rKill or its variants in safemode, it says that its stopped working and that a problem has caused it to stop working correctly. The command prompt window still stays open and goes through the process but it always ends up not killing any process.

I finally got fed up and ran rKill in regular mode and it successfully stopped some program that I found was installed yesterday when I started having my problems. However, Malwarebytes still came up clean. The very first time I ran it it found one thing and took care of it. I also replaced the host files several times and it seems to have no effect. By the way, I don't have a C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS. I have C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS. Is that the same?

How should I proceed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I should also mention that I never had to change my IE settings. Maybe I have a variant of the virus?
