Hi,

I have a Compaq Presario CQ42 laptop running Windows 7 SP1. I was happily playing a DVD, put in another one but the laptop wouldn't read the DVD. The DVD drive itself has disappeared. I have tried removing Lower Filters in the registry, no effect. I have tried uninstalling drive and reinstalling, no effect. I'm not getting any error messages. One minute the drive is there, the next it is gone.

Appreciate any help,

Thanks Brad

System information for CD-ROM says:

PNP Device ID: IDE\CDROMHP_DVD_RW_AD-7701H________________285___\4&841C0B7&0...

So I assume that means it is IDE not SATA.

Insert a BOOTABLE disc in the drive. Make sure the optical drive is the first device in the bios boot order. Reboot. Does the system boot to the disc you inserted?

It reads the bootable disc fine.
The disc I was trying to play can be read elsewhere.
Other discs are fine on the laptop.
It must just be that one disc is corrupt in some way.

Thanks for the help.
