Hello,

For anyone who can help me out: I have a Vaio laptop with Windows XP. I have a virus or other infection causing four main issues (that I'm aware of):
1. All my desktop icons, programs, and documents have disappeared (!!)
2. Streaming audio plays even when the internet and all other programs are closed
3. We're getting pop-up errors titled "Internet Explorer Script Error" and ask if we want to continue running scripts on this page (even when nothing is open).
4. The browsing history is filling up with random search sites.

I'm pretty technologically incompetent but have tried everything as best I can. I've used Malware bytes to run a full scan on the computer and removed 12 items. I have tried running TDSSkiller and nothing happens when I try to open it. I have changed the file name/type to .com with no result. The icons changed when I changed the name so am not sure if they are even viable in that format.

I ran the logs requested in the "Preparation" section but may need to do it again since I've run other scans since then (?).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. It's pretty amazing that this support is out there.[/b]

Thanks for the reply, Gringo - I appreciate your time and help.

Last week I ran DeFogger.exe and disabled the CD Emulation drivers. I haven't changed anything since then so believe they should still be disabled but downloaded the program again and tried to open it to double check. Windows asked me which program I want to open DeFogger with and I wasn't able to open it. The same thing happened after downloading Rootkit Unhooker. It shows on my desktop but won't open without selecting a program to open the file with (??).

I was able to run new DDS logs, which I pasted below:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Scan with exeHelper:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I ran exeHelper, below:

exeHelper by Raktor
Build 20100414
Run at 16:57:53 on 05/07/11
Now searching...
Checking for numerical processes...
Checking for sysguard processes...
Checking for bad processes...
Checking for bad files...
Checking for bad registry entries...
Resetting filetype association for .exe
Resetting filetype association for .com
Resetting userinit and shell values...
Resetting policies...
--Finished--

I downloaded Combofix but haven't run yet because I'm not sure if my antivirus/scan programs are disabled. I had Cyberdefender before though it wasn't an active registration. Last week I downloaded Malwarebytes, SUPER Antispyware Free Edition, & Uniblue Registry Booster. The virus hid all my programs on my start menu, desktop, & lower right hand on the toolbar so I'm not sure what is active on the computer. Is there an easy way to find out what's active & disable them?

Sorry!

Gringo,

Files are back! The program link you provided worked - thank you.

I also ran Combofix and am not sure if it completed. It said it was removing an imbedded rootkit on a file named volsnap. The computer didn't restart or say when the program finished the removal but there was a report on the desktop. Pasted below:

File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully
File list cleared
File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully
File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully

The computer seems to be running normally. I haven't experienced any audio files playing randomly and having my files back is a relief.

Does this resolve the issue or is there anything else I should do? If this has gotten rid of the virus issue, do I need to re-enable the CD Emulation drivers or set up a new antivirus?

Thank you!

Gringo,

Sorry for my delayed response. I tried running the combofix a few more times and after going through the initial prompts and warnings, I get a window with blue interior that shows the C/: and a blinking cursor. I thought that was part of running the program but it doesn't ever continue on from there. I also had a sudden rash of new Internet Explorer Script error windows popping up and issues with web pages redirecting me away from any pages I tried to open (such as this one) - though that seems to have gone away again today.

Am I doing something wrong running the combofix? Or is this the virus/rootkit trying to block its own removal?

Ready to try anything.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

I tried TDSSKiller before and was never able to get it to run although I tried renaming it. I downloaded it to my desktop again and this time, as soon as I double-clicked on it, XP Security popped up and started running a scan even though their firewall & scan is turned off. My computer froze & I had to do a hard shut down. Once it was back on, I tried running TDSSKiller again and multiple alerts popped up from XP Security, CyberDefender, and Registry Booster and they all started running scans. I also have a window open that I'm not sure what it is. It's a window that's all black inside and the top has a carrot & "C:\Program Files/Apoint/Aptnex.exe". Also had some random audio clips start playing.
