Microsoft Security Essentials Not working

Up until recently, I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials to catch viruses, etc. on my computer. I actually really like it, and it has found several things and shut them down before they became problems. However, recently, I got a virus on my computer that actually shut it down and I haven't been able to remove the virus and get it back and running. Please help!
