Earlier today our cable company told us that a computer behind our broadband connection is showing signs of infection with the Rustock rootkit, so we will not get our connection back on a permanent basis until this is resolved. (We have been temporarily reconnected so we can download anti-malware software--the advice we get from the cable company is very basic and boils down to "run long scans.") Four computers are involved, all four have been scanned, and so far three of the four (not including mine) have had infections reported when scanned with various tools (two with Microsoft Safety Scanner, one with StopZilla).

I ran Microsoft Safety Scanner's short scan on mine and it reports no infected files. However, I also ran Gmer and RootkitRevealer, and both turned up suspicious entries which are symptomatic of Rustock as described here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Win32%2fRustock

The example name for the dynamically-generated Rustock installer used in this article is 7005d59.sys, but on my system it appears to be wintdz.sys. The Gmer log is as follows:

GMER 1.0.15.15572 - http://www.gmer.net

---- EOF - GMER 1.0.15 ----

I have looked at the file wintdz.sys in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers and it seems to be continuously updated because the file timestamp always matches the current time, whatever it may be. I cannot upload it to VirusTotal.com for a scan, nor can I copy it to another directory and upload it from there. There are Registry keys (HKLM\SOFTWARE\ControlSet* as given above) with wintdz entries, and when I navigate to them in Registry Editor, it reports "Cannot open wintdz: Error while opening key." Both of these behaviors are clearly malicious.

I would be much obliged for advice on what to do.

I am attaching DDS and Gmer logs.

We have told the cable company the recommended scans have been finished and our connection has been restored, but since my computer still manifests the malicious behavior, I am voluntarily limiting my Internet use (turning off the wifi with a hardware switch when it is not in use) to minimize the risk of further disconnection.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

The computer runs much as before. The two TrueType font files which Combofix identified as viruses and quarantined are false positives--I made them myself in CorelDRAW and I have already reinstalled them because I need them for an ongoing project. The file wintdz.sys is still in my \system32\ directory and still has a key in my registry. Both still show the behaviors described in the OP.

I don't think the infection has been removed.

I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

KillAll::

RootKit::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\wintdz.sys

Driver::
wintdz
wintdz.sys

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

The wintdz key has disappeared from the registry. File wintdz.sys is still in my \system32\ directory, but the timestamp is no longer changing (it is still at 17:06 and it is 17:26 on the system clock as I am writing this).

[A little time passes]

However, something strange has just happened.

After Combofix stopped running, I reactivated on-access scanning in Sophos. I also did not restore the fractionbar2008.ttf file to the fonts directory, unlike the previous time. I then attempted to re-open a CorelDRAW file which is the only file which references the font contained in fractionbar2008.ttf. When CorelDRAW opens a file, it first checks to make sure that all the fonts referenced in that file are still installed in the Windows font directory. Two things happened at the same time:

* CorelDRAW told me that it could not find the fractionbar2008.ttf file.

* Sophos kicked up a System Tray message saying that it had moved wintdz.sys to its quarantine area, saying it is part of "Troj/Mal-NEA."

Combofix has moved fractionbar2008.ttf to its quarantine folder (as noted in log). I have uploaded it to virustotal.com and the score is 0/43, as shown here:

http://www.virustotal.com/file-scan/report.html?id=e5acfb4c6c6aab8e3551ffb1fa57e276d8a1fbc39e1daa527e73c4e4c29bdf18-1305045172

I am not sure whether to re-insert this into my fonts directory. I don't know if virus components have been added to it without my knowledge, but on the other hand I really do need the glyph contained in this font (there are no acceptable substitutes).

Hello

reinstall the file and lets see if it comes back - so as far as I read this the bad file is now under quarintin correct

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

I have done as instructed or suggested in the last post, with the following exceptions:

* I have not yet reinstalled fractionbar2008.ttf. There are actually two copies of it that I have--the one in the ComboFix quarantine folder, and another in a separate directory (the original as saved in CorelDRAW and then installed). I have not yet checked to make sure that both copies have the same MD5 hash.

* I did not install the current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. I believe Reader in general is trashware, and use other programs for viewing and manipulating PDF files. I did uninstall version 7.

* When I was uninstalling the Java stuff, I failed to scroll down to the end and missed the following:

Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

I plan to go back and remove these.

Logs follow.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ehTray] C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe

I have decided to defer startup item cleanup until a later time.

I have now run the Eset scanner (I had to stop it and re-start it as an overnight job since it was still at 21% completion after two hours). The log is as follows:

C:\Program Files\WinRAR\crack.zip a variant of Win32/HackTool.Patcher.A application
C:\Program Files\WinRAR\patch.exe a variant of Win32/HackTool.Patcher.A application

Hello

There are some minor things in your online scan that should be removed.

delete files

  • Copy all text in the quote box (below)...to Notepad.

    @echo off
    del /f /s /q "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\crack.zip"
    del /f /s /q "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\patch.exe"
    del /f /s /q "D:\software\downloaded-software\ImageConvPlus71971102.rar "
    del /f /s /q "D:\SmitfraudFix\Process.exe"
    del /f /s /q "D:\SmitfraudFix\restart.exe"
    del /f /s /q "D:\hldg\SmitfraudFix.exe"
    del %0

  • Save the Notepad file on your desktop...as delfile.bat... save type as "All Files"
It should look like this: Posted Image<--XPPosted Image<--vista
  • Double click on delfile.bat to execute it.
A black CMD window will flash, then disappear...this is normal.
  • The files and folders, if found...will have been deleted and the "delfile.bat" file will also be deleted.

The rest of the Online scan is only reporting backups created during the course of this fix C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\, and/or items located in System Restore's cache C:\System Volume Information\, Whatever is in these folders can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. the following steps will remove these backups.

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware - Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.

Any programs and logs that are left over you can just be deleted from the desktop. TFC is a free temp file cleaner that is very easy to use, I would keep this and use before you do any scans or when you want to free up some space.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector

:Turn On Automatic Updates:

Turn On Automatic Updates
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:

  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and using often.
