My PC is infected with Windows Recovery malware. Scanned it with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Avira AntiVir Personal. Managed to remove some virus. However, still experiencing false script errors and some files are still hidden.

I read through the Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html).

Do I continue with the following?
-Enable firewall
-Download DeFogger to disable CD Emulation drivers
-Download DDS. Run it to obtain two Notepad windows named dds.txt and attach.txt.

Really appreciate it if someone can help me to remove the remaining infections. Thank you.

EDIT: Please follow the steps in the guide and post your DDS and GMER logs. ~Budapest

I am also infected with "XP Home Security 2011" Malware. Need a few tries to get Firefox working without being redirect to "XP Home Security 2011" website. When I finally got it running, experienced "XP Home Security" and "Internet Explorer Scrip Error" pop-ups.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Hi CatByte,

Sorry for the late reply. My browser was down yesterday. Every time I use Firefox/Internet Explorer, I was redirected to "XP Home Security 2011" web page. My in-law helped me to download Ad-Aware using USB. Did a scan, downloaded Firefox again and managed to get it up running.

Tried downloading ComboFix from both suggested locations (with AntiVirus and AntiSpyware disabled). Did not get the prompts to "allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console". I did however get a ComboFix.exe icon on my desktop. When I double-click it, it prompt me to choose a browser to "open file with". When I do that, it just prompt me to download ComboFix again.

Am I doing something wrong? Please bear with me as my computer skill is not that great. Thank you.

Regards,
Al

Hi CatByte,

Download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to my desktop. When I Double click the aswMBR.exe icon, the same thing happened. It prompt me to choose a browser to "open file with". When I do that, I get this: Opening aswMBR.exe You have choosen to open aswMBR.exe which is a: Application from: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Desktop. Would you like to save this file?

Looks like I am unable run the programs from my desktop.

OK

Please do the following:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

now try the aswMBR program again

Yes, Re-Run aswMBR

  • Click Scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the FIX button,
  • There is a slight pause after clicking the 'Fix' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

NEXT

Please run ComboFix, post the resulting log (allow it to update if it requests to do so)

Hi,

Please do the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 25 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says JDK 6 Update 25 (JDK or JRE)
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u25 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

NEXT

Please post a fresh DDS Log and advise how the computer is running now and if there are any outstanding issues

Managed to download both Acrobat Reader (version X) and Java (new version).
PC is now operating "normally". Have not encounter any problems so far. Really like to thank you for your time and expertize.

Should I remove the programs I no longer require? Thanks.
