All desktop icons and shortcuts disappeared

All my icons and shortcuts are gone from the desktop. Please help

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Right-click on the desktop and if a menu pops up, click on "View" and make sure the option "Show desktop icons" is checked.
