I have a computer which started misbehaving after the program BlinkX Beat was unintentionally installed on the machine. It would play videos at annoying times, acting as a screen saver. Removing the program makes the videos stop - but it is not possible to uninstall the program through the Control Panel / Add/Remove Software - a window pops up asking for permission to run au_.exe in order for it to uninstall. I do not recognize the file, so I will not run it. Malware-Bytes identified a file and isolated it called WMIADAP.EXE. One other by product since this happened is that the AOL mailbox no longer shows and sender or subject info - only the little mail icons in the in box. Could someone please have a look at the logs and see if there is an infection they can identify? Thank you!

Hello ,
And :welcome: to the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum
. My name is Elise and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.
You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications. The topics you are tracking are shown here.
-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
If you have already posted a log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

-------------------------------------------------------------
In the meantime please, do NOT install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem

If you still need help, please include the following in your next reply
  • A detailed description of your problems
  • A new DDS log (don't forget attach.txt)

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

regards, Elise

Do you see anything that would indicate a malware infection?

Hello again,

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Hi again, how are things running at this point?

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 25 (JDK or JRE).
  • Click the "Download JRE" button at the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Select "Windows x86 Offline" and click on jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Uninstall all older versions of Java (any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE or J2SE in the name).
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Install the newest version by double clicking (run as Administrator for Windows Vista/Seven) the downloaded file.

Please launch Malwarebytes Antimalware, update it and run a full scan. Post me the resulting log.

regards, Elise

Elise,

I neglected to mention the occurrence of a pop-up which I had never seen before after I completed the Malware Scan and opened AOL. It is a message from the Internet Explorer Add-on Installer for Microsoft Windows trying to install something and asking the user to continue. I closed the window. It popped up again later.

In the details there is this key:

BDB57FF2-79B9-4205-9447-F5FE8537312

Are you familiar with this pop-up? Should the add-on be installed or can the pop-up be removed?

Thank you for your continuing efforts to rid my computer of unwanted software. You are appreciated!

Rosemary Franzese

I did not update Malwarebites DataBase, but it was only 24 days old.

24 days is pretty old when it comes to security software updates. New malware comes out each day, and database updates are released even so often to catch all latest nasties.

That add on is perfectly legit and can be installed.

ESET ONLINE SCANNER
----------------------------
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

regards, Elise

Elise,

Here's a report from my 1st run of ESET. When starting to install, I was given notice of other antivirus SW: MS Windows Defender and Symantec Corp Norton 360. Windows Defender was already turned off. I turned off Norton Firewall and Antivirus for 15 minutes, believing that ESET would be a brief scan. I started ESET and it executed for 1 hour and 23 minutes, during which time the Norton Firewall and Antivirus were turned back on. The ESET summary said one file had been cleaned and another file was corrupt, with a name containing Win32/Adware. I tried to List Threats but couldn't because there was a pop-up asking if I wanted to close the open Tab or all Tabs. When I selected to close one Tab, the ESET page disappeared and I didn't find any icon for ESET on my Desktop. I'm going to start this process again after I turn off Norton again, for several hours.

Elise,

Here's a report on my 2nd run of ESET. I turned off Norton and started ESET after selecting the Settings you specified. This time it ran for 1 hour 13 minutes. Unfortunately, there were no threats.....and consequently no List of Threats.

I selected the only option: 'Manage quarantine' which resulted in a window titled Scan Results. There was one file listed which I could not copy. I captured the file name manually:
C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\APP Data\Local\Microsoft Windows Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4HOPPK5N\Upgrade[1]/cab

I beleive I gave access to some file with a cab in it during ESET. There were two Scan Results options: Restore (the above typed file) or <<BACK. I selected <<Back.

The final two options on the ESET run page were 'Uninstall application or close' and 'Delete Quarantined Files' - I did not select either one. Finally I selected FINISH.

Unfortunately there was no EXPORT option nor file or list of threats to export. Also, the files listed as threats from the 1st run of ESET did not appear.

Did ESET create a folder that contains the output from the two scans? I'm hoping.

Sorry you didn't receive the output you were expecting.

Hi, don't worry, that is okay. :)

ALL CLEAN
--------------
Your machine appears to be clean, please take the time to read below on how to secure the machine and take the necessary steps to keep it clean :)

Please do the following to remove the remaining programs from your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
  • Click start > run and type combofix /uninstall, press enter. This will remove Combofix from your computer.
  • Delete DDS and GMER (this is a random named file)
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall. If you are connected to the internet through a router, you are already behind a hardware firewall and as such you do not need an extra software firewall.
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing.

Elise,

Your assistance in getting rid of Blinkx Beat has been invaluable. I've been getting assistance in running the scans and following your directions. I need that assistance now to delete the tools and understand your advice. For that reason I would like to keep this problem log open another day or two in case I have further questions following your advice.

ESET isn't on the list of tools to remove. Should it be removed?

Thank you VERY MUCH for your attention to my problem and your speedy resolution. I will send you another reply in the next day or two.

You're most welcome Rosemary! :)

ESET isn't on the list of tools to remove. Should it be removed?

You can remove it using Add/Remove programs. Its up to you if you want to keep it or not.
