Hello guys.

I had been posting in a thread with boopme (who was kind enough to offer his assistance and I am extremely grateful for that) The thread is in this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic392753.html. After a few replies, it turned out that I had a recent strain of the TDSS malware, called THL. I was told follow steps 6-9 in this thread (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html) but skip the part with the GMER.

Here is the log that my DDS scan yielded. This one is from DDS.txt

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.

Posted Image Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • If you have trouble, stop and post back. Do not try to repeatedly run comboFix!
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log

I've run ComboFix, and it reported that it detected rootkit activity and needed to reboot. When it scanned, it performed another reboot, with it saying that it deleted a certain file and that it cannot access a certain registry file. At the very last phase, it says that it is producing a log and that I should not run any other application until combofix is finished. After a little while, windows explorer crashes and restarts, and I never hear from the scan again. Does this mean that the malware has stopped ComboFix from completing the process, or is the log somewhere I can find?

Another interesting thing is that after I use ComboFix, my access to the internet is restricted and I cannot access websites despite the status of the network being completley normal (n.b.: there isn't any malware preventing me from seeing a site, it just says that firefox is unable to connect). I had to renew the IP address and upon opening Firefox, it prompted me whether I should use it as my default browser (which I have been the entire time, so it is rather odd that it is giving me this prompt)

CrazedRaven:

ComboFix restores several settings, including the default browser, to their defaults so that is why you got the prompt from Firefox. Please reboot your PC, then do this - it will open the ComboFix log if one was created:

Posted Image Click Start > Run or press Windows Key + R copy/paste the following into the run box that opens and press OK:
c:\ComboFix.txt

If the log opens, please stop and post it. If no log is found, please run ComboFix again.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log

I cannot seem to run 'ComboFix.txt' and another very peculiar thing is that winrar went about extracting stuff from ComboFix.exe, and the contents are now in a folder on my desktop screen called '32788R22FWJFW'. A few seconds later, the folder changed places (i.e.: it is in a different place on the desktop screen)

I tried running ComboFix again, and it didn't detect the rootkit activity. Nevertheless, the same thing happened with the computer rebooting and the programme crashing upon start up as it is preparing its log. However, I was able to write down what happened during the process so you are not completely left in the dark.

In the middle of the process, it says 'Cannot create file C\:Qoobox\Quarantine\Registry_backup\tcpip.reg

Between stages 38 and 39 it deletes a file

deleting Windows\temp\logihrd\LVPrcInj01.dll

One other interesting development is that the TDSSKiller app that boopme requested I use now works after the ComboFix scan. It didn't turn up anything, however.

I have to confess that I was foolish enough run ComboFix.exe before I was referred to this thread. and after running ComboFix, I got something on my desktop called 'catchme.log' Here is what it showed

File "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully

After you told me to run ComboFix when I was referred to this thread, the txt file was amended

File "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully
File "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully
File list cleared

Hope that helps

CrazedRaven:

OK, since more has gone on here that I was aware of let's get a fresh look at what's left. Please don't run any other tools or scans without being directed to do so - I know you mean well, but it complicates things for me. Please do this next:

Posted Image Please run DDS again and post only the DDS.txt log

Posted Image Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • DDS.txt log
  • GMER log

My apologies. I thought some independent research might help you. Very well, but what about usage of RKill (to prevent the remaining malware from causing more damage to the computer)?

Here is the DDS log

When you say 'don't miss' the 'show all option on the GMER scan, I assume you mean make sure it is unchecked. Is that right?

Since the log is a little long and cannot be posted, I've attached it.

Hi,

We use RKill when the malware is blocking our tools from running which is no longer the case with your PC. While I look those logs over please tell me what, if any, symptoms you are still having. Also, did you uninstall ComboFix?

Ah, the reason why I use RKill is because some of the logs still show some processes that it picked up on. I get the feeling that the malware is still there, but the symptoms seemed to have disappeared, most of them at least. At the moment the google redirects are not there, but in the event they still are, I will notify you ASAP.

The only weird thing that happened was the extraction of the combofix.exe. Should I delete the 32788R22FWJFW as well as the Combofix.exe?

OK, the logs are looking much better. I'd like you to delete both of those files then download a new copy of ComboFix. This time, please run it in the Safe Mode Here are the download links for ComboFix:

Something weird is happening.

I deleted the folder, but the one on the desktop is refusing to go. It prompts me if I am sure to delete it and when I say 'yes', it has another prompt saying 'Could not find this item. This is no longer located in c:/users/CrazedRaven/Desktop. Verify the item's location and try again.' Yet the file is still visibly on the desktop. Would a reboot get rid of the programme?

EDIT: I have managed to delete the exe file upon reboot, but when I downloaded and ran ComboFix again, the same exact thing happened in my previous post (i.e.: closing when it prepares a log)

Sorry, I forgot.

I ran it safe mode as you asked, and the same thing still happened. The only diference is that it kept saying that 'access was denied' because of lack of administration permission (even though I did run it as administrator). Also, that file that it tried to delete wasn't there anymore.

CrazedRaven:

OK, thanks for trying. The good news is that ComboFix handled the rootkit - we can handle the rest a different way. Please do this now:
