Hello there,

First post, so I'll start by thanking anyone in advance for any help they are able to offer. I'm innumerate and computer illiterate, so I need all the help I can get.

My ol' Compaq laptop has been infected with a nasty redirect virus. It's started with pop-up screens, in addition to its redirection of search engine inquiries.

I've run MSE, Maywarebytes, Combo-fix, and an online scan from ESET today - following the basic instructions given in this thread (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic388193.html) up to but not including virustotal.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

-Chris

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:

Hello, and thanks for your help!

I am still infected. The only issue is redirection (sometimes from google, and sometimes as random popups). Also, my MSE won't run due to a 'connectivity error', and sometimes my internet connection fails temporarily until I restart the computer and reset the modem/router.

So far I've run: MSE, Malwarebytes, Combo-fix, and completed an online scan from ESET.

I am running XP 2002, Service Pack 3, 32 bit. I don't have the CD. It's a factory installed version of Windows, though, and not pirated.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi,

sorry about the missing pictures. This should be fixed for the future.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you choose to clean, please try to run a fix with aswMBR next:
Re-Run aswMBR

  • Click Scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the FIX button,
  • There is a slight pause after clicking the 'Fix' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Ok, thanks for all your help. When I ran the aswMBR program according to the directions you gave me, it froze up w/o reading 'Infection fixed successfully'. However, it did read 'MBR fixed' or 'cleaned' (I can't recall exactly). I rebooted and rescanned, and have posted the log below. A couple questions, if you don't mind:

1). Will I have any trouble pulling stored data from the infected computer? MP3s, WordDocs, etc.?

2). I'm on a router with another computer - it doesn't redirect, but is there any chance it's been infected through the router?

EDIT: I need to save this computer, even if I can't use it for email/password-sensitive sites, etc. I'm running a GMER scan now and will post the results when I'm done. And below is the second aswMBR scan after I rebooted - is there anything else I can do to maximize my chances of saving the computer?

Heya,

the aswMBR log is looking good, do you still experience redirects? If not we may have disabled the infection. What I said earlier about the remaining insecurity still holds true, but as far as I can see the infection is gone.

The router is not getting infected per se, what happens is that some settings (notable the DNS servers) are changed. Changes in the router are global and apply to all PCs on the network.

If you want to be 100% secure that the router is not infected, you can reset it:

Router Reset
  • Please read this: Malware Silently Alters Wireless Router Settings

  • Consult this link to find out what is the default username and password of your router and note down them: Route Passwords

  • Then rest your router to it's factory default settings:

"If your machine has been infected by one of these Zlob/DNSchanger Trojans, and your router settings have been altered, I would strongly recommend that you reset the router to its default configuration. Usually, this can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds)"

  • This is the difficult part.
First get to the routers server. To do that type http:\\192.168.1.1 in the address bar and click Enter. You get the log in window.
Fill in the password you have already found and you will get the configuration page.
Configure the router to allow you to connect to your ISP server. In some routers it is done by a setup wizard. But you have to fill in the log in password your ISP has initially given to you.
You can also call your ISP if you don't have your initial password.
Don't forget to change the routers default password and set a strong password. Note down the password and keep it somewhere for future reference.

  • Please make sure of the following settings:
    • Go to start => Control panel => Double-click Network and Sharing Center.
    • In the left window select Manage network Connection.
    • In the right window right-click Local Area connection and select Properties .
    • Internet Protocol Version 6 (IP6v) should be checked. Double-click on it: Make sure of the following settings:
    • The option Obtain an IP address automatically should be checked.
    • The option Obtain DNS server address automatically should be checked.
    • Click OK.
    • Internet Protocol Version 4 (IP4v) should be checked. Double-click on it.[list]
    • The option Obtain an IP address automatically should be checked.
    • The option Obtain DNS server address automatically should be checked.
  • Click OK twice.
  • If you should change any setting reboot the computer.

If you already have a unique and strong password on your router, it should not have been infected.

Hi,

is the gmer log from this PC? It looks like some part of the removal is not entirely done yet. A reboot might remove those registry entries.

Please run a scan with Eset to hceck for leftovers:
ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Thank you. Yes, the GMER log is from the infected PC. Here's the ESET log (it found 5 infections):

Hi,

you can remove the entries found by Eset by flushing java cache:
Clear the Java cache:
  • Go to Start -> Control Panel.
  • In the Control Panel, double-click the Java icon.
    • The Java Control Panel appears.
  • Click Settings... under "Temporary Internet Files".The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click Delete Files...The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
  • Click OK on the Delete Temporary Files window.
NOTE: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache!
  • Click OK on the Temporary Files Settings window.
  • Close the Java Control Panel.

You can also view these instructions along with screenshots here.

Is the PC doing well?
