I had a fake hard disc alert pop a few days ago. I tried to stop it with alt f4 and it would not stop. I tried cntrl alt del and it would not stop so I manually shut down my computer. I ran ad-aware, spybot, malwarebytes, and finally a mcaffe stinger that I got off of the web. The stinger found two fakealert viruses and said that it removed the files that they were in. I tried to update windows and it says I must logged in as the admin. which I am but it will not update. Also I can not see any of my bookmarks on Yahoo. I had symantec 10.1 client but the virus removed my virus defs and would not let me upload a new one. So I removed symantec and installed Avast and ran scans but found nothing. There are a couple of other programs that are not working properly as well.
Here are the logs requested in the preparation guide.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hello,
I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right spot to respond with my information. When I replied to Myrti's post, there was no way to attach a file. Sorry for the duplication.

Here is my Extras.txt file attached.

Yes,

I can not update windows, error says I must be administrator which I am.
Just today, I have not been able to see my Excel files which is disastrous for me and my business.
The excel file icons had turned a pale shade for the last few days and now I can't see them at all. I think they are still there but they are hidden where I can't see them in my computer or find them when I do a search for them.
I have a program called Amtek that also is not working.

Please let me know what I can do.

Thanks,
Calvin.

I found the files by checking the show hidden files in folder options, but why or how they get hidden in the first place?

Calvin.

Hi,

that's the virus trying to make you think everything is lost unless you buy their stuff.

Please run unhide.exe to reveal your files again:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

To fix your Windows Update issues please try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Hello Myrti,

Everything seems to be running well now. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help in this matter.
Can you tell me which virus I actually had?

I will be sure to donate and help in any way I can.

Thanks again for helping a complete stranger with no expected gain for doing so.

You guys are the best!

Calvin.

Hi,

I can not tell you definitively what you had, sorry. Most topics I see with your symptoms relate to Windows restore or a similar rogue anti virus program.

You can see its symptoms here: link. In particular the hidden files stand out.

Please run a scan with Eset to check for leftovers:
ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
