I was using AVG when I got this Virus but now I am using Norton Security Suite. I have also run full scans with Glary Utilities, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware, and IObit Security 360 and I removed anything that these scans reported. Here are my problems:

1. Popups and Re-directs. IE8 has popup blocker turned on but various sites keep poping up.

2. Computer has become very slow. When I goto Task Manager I notice svchost.exe SYSTEM is using a lot of memory, sometimes up to 500,000K. When I End Process for svchost.exe the computer runs better.

3. Outlook has trouble opening and finding the file that stores all my emails. I sometimes have to use Safe Mode with networking to get email.

4. Norton reports very often: An Intrusion atempt by termol5ter-i2.com was blocked.

Here is my DDS log:

Please help. Thank you!

Two additional notes:
1. Some of the scans (that I mentioned above) asked me to reboot. However, Windows froze while "Saving your settings" and after waiting at least an hour I had to hold the power button to get the computer to turn off.
2. I have been randomly getting this Windows error. Title Bar says: svchost.exe - Application Error.
See attachment for screen shot and more information.

Trying second time to post screen shot attachment.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

Myrti - Thank you for your help. I had 2 problems running OTL.exe. First OTL would not open until I pressed ctr/alt/del and end task for svchost.exe SYSTEM. Second it gave me a error box saying: Invalid time flag! md4start Must be numerical.

I cannot find the restore CD for this computer or the winXP CD for this computer. It is in the house somewhere and I will continue to look. I do have an XP CD for another computer if that helps. I really do not want to restore this computer because of all the program updates and instals (MS Office etc).

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP3 (95% sure it is 32 bit).

I will provide logs if you have a fix for the Invalid time flag.

Thank you for your time and help!

Hi,

I don't please rerun an updated scan with DDS instead:
Please run a scan with DDS:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
    DDS.scr
    DDS.pif
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Please also run a scan with TDSSKiller:
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt

  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

regards myrti

Hi Myrti, Rebooting seemed to fix the OTL problem so here is the OTL.txt scans. It did not produce the minimized Extra.txt. I ran OTL twice to be sure. I am also including DDS and TDSSKiller logs you asked for in your second post.

Hi,

did running TDSSKiller improve the PC?

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files listed below in bold, then click Submit. You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi Myrti,

You are amazing. You were able to zero in on a fix before you saw a single scan. How did you know what to do? You fixed something that AVG, Norton, Lavasoft, MBAM, IObit Security 360, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spybot S&D could not catch or fix. Norton is no longer reporting intrusion attempts. I have not been on the internet enough on this computer today to know if I am still getting redirects but so far so good.

This computer still seems sluggish. But nowhere near as bad as it was. If you see anything else in the logs that I should do, please let me know.

Here are the results of the Jetti Scan:

This file has been scanned before. The results for this previous scan are listed below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Filename: wmfhotfix.dll
Status: Scan finished. 0 out of 20 scanners reported malware.
Scan taken on: Sat 13 Feb 2010 12:21:21 (CET) Permalink

Additional info
File size: 3584 bytes
Filetype: PE32 executable for MS Windows (DLL) (GUI) Intel 80386 32-bit
MD5: 404b153a49bb10503fde84de604b9895
SHA1: b685350d53211b56347701dc8d327919c6b0bac4

Thank you,

Hi,

I'm happy to hear that! :) The infection you had is a very common infection at the moment and I'm sorry to say I have some bad news about it:
The infection is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted entirely. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to go on with the clean, please run a scan for leftovers with Eset:
ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Hi Myrti,
This has been a busy week so it took me awhile to absorb your last post. Thank you for your patience and help. I have a lot of questions.
  • What infection did I have? Can I research it further?
  • Why didn't AVG prevent or remove the infection? I tried to fix the problem myself with Norton, Lavasoft, MBAM, IObit Security 360, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spybot S&D. Why didn't any of these find the threat?
  • I would prefer to try to clean this computer. It is about 6 years old and a lot of effort would be required to reinstall and update software.
  • I mostly use this computer for surfing, email (ms outlook and myYahoo and use outlook web access for work email) but I also have Quicken and use it to keep track of finances. I also log into bank sites (and wonder if I should even be saying that here). I have not used Quicken or bank sites on this computer for about a month - since I first noticed problems with this computer. Is it safe to use quicken now? Maybe I should install quicken on another computer and copy the data file to the other computer.
  • Is there a possibility that the threat that I had has installed a key logger program? That is my biggest fear. I worry that if I log into a financial site that my user names and passwords are being recorded.
  • I often use a flash drive to move files between home and work. Is there a way to do the TDSSKiller.exe scan on my flash drive?
  • I work for a large school system and my work PC is part of a network. I do not have all the same problems at work that I had here at home, but I do notice one problem that is the same. The svchost.exe SYSTEM service that I see when I do ctrl alt delete is very large and seems to slow down the computer at work. When I "End Process", the computer gets faster. This happened at home until you fixed it. What is svchost and why does it get so big? Should I do the TDSSKiller.exe scan at work? I'm not sure that my user rights at work allow me to do scans.
  • Your directions tell me to change passwords of finacial sites on a known clean computer. I have 5 computers at home but have no certainty that any of them are perfectly clean. Is there a way for me to tell?
  • This post shows about 175 views. Now I am paranoid. Why so much interest in my post. Could hackers be watching so they know how to undo your fix?
  • One issue that I am still having on this computer is I never stay logged into a site. Examples: bleepingcomputer and myYahoo. When I log into these two sites, I check the "remember me" or "keep me signed in" box. But each time I come back I have to log back in. On other computers, these sites remember me when I return.
  • I plan to donate. What is a decent amount for your services?

Thank you always for your help.

Hi,

sorry for the delay.

Wow, that's a lot of questions you have right there. :grinner:

Lemme see if I can answer them all:
  • The infection you had is called TDL4, it's basically the top of the top. The makers are very skilled, very active people. Just googling TDL will give you a good idea of what is out there. Almost all major vendors have published whitepapers (often highly technical though) on the infection. There's a good number of things that the infection "did for the first time".
This is an old post (about 18months now) about an older version of the infection, but most of what they said is still true today: link. (Apart from them being the only to detect it, etc)
  • The infection gets updated and changed multiple times a day, which is one of the reasons it probably escaped AVG when it was installed. Once it is installed it is very hard for an anti virus program to catch it. It is the number one infection we remove here on the forum. Likely 60-70% of all topics here evolve around the infection. See also the link in the reply to number1 above.
  • Ok, we'll do our best. :)
  • TDL4 is not primarily aimed towards data stealing. They get their revenue from ads and the google redirects. An interesting read with regards to this, may be the first part of this article: link. However some variants have keylogging capabilities and it would probably be safe to inform your bank that your PC was compromised and ask what they suggest. I'd also keep an eye on your bank account these next few weeks. Most likely nothing will happen, but it's best to prepare for hte case if something happens.
  • Well, yes. That is the issue with backdoor infections. Almost anything is possible or more to the point almost nothing can be completely ruled out. I have however seen no indication of a keylogger in your logs so far.
  • No, TDSSKiller does not scan flash drives, however Flash_Disinfector will check for infections on a flash drive and vaccinate it against future infections:
Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
    • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
    • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
    • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
    • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.
  • svchost is short for "service host", basically it is used to execute other files through it. More here. It is normal to have multiple instances running and if they aren't running you may lose anything from sound to internet over keyboard functionality.
There are however a good number of infections making use of it as well. A typical infection using svchost and infecting large networks is conficker. Maybe do the conficker test on your school-PCs: conficker eye chart. If you think the PC is infected, you should contact the IT department. Most tools we use do need administrative rights to run and unlike the malware, they do not use system flaws to escalate their rights if run in a limited user environment.
  • One solution would be to wait until we made sure this one is most likely clean. There is no total certainty here, only "we're very sure". Usually a lack of symptoms is a first good indicator of a clean PC. Alternatively try a different operating system, such as Linux as there are almost no known active live malware for those currently out there. (Apple would work to, although there is some malware out for them now).
  • This site is indexed by google and other search engines. They generate an additional view every time someone clicks on it in google search results plus they visit it regularly to see if the content changed. 175 is not uncommon, if anything it's actually rather low. If you look at the other threads in this forum, you will see that the number of visits for the other threads are very similar.
  • Do you delete your temporary files and cookies regularly? Do you block cookies in your browser? These may be reasons why you do not stay logged in.
  • Any amount really. It's a donation, not a payment. Just give what you think is right and you can spare. :)

Hi Myrti,

You did well with my questions. The links in #1 & #4 are mostly over my head, but I think I get the gist. Here are my follow ups:

Regarding #3 (cleaning this computer), is there more to do? So far we only ran TDSSKiller.

Regarding #4 I ran Flash_Disinfector. It did not report finding anything. I am posting the contents of autorun.inf because I was alarmed about the reference to "ACTION=Wireless Network Setup Wizard". I do not know what that means.

[autorun]
OPEN=nmusbcfg.exe
ICON=nmusbcfg.ico
ACTION=Wireless Network Setup Wizard

Regarding Conflicker... On every computer that I ran it, the top middle picture (SecureWorks) did not show up. Is that a problem?

Please let me know what else to do to attempt to clean this computer.

Thank you,

Michael

Hi,

the autorun.inf looks legit.

I also checked the conficker chart, it seems as if the center image is currently down. I had it checked before linking you and it was up, this is no longe rthe case. Sorry about that.

TDSSKiller is not the only tool we ran, I did check the scans from DDS and OTL, as well as GMER. They didn't show anything besides the infection TDSSKiller removed. We also run ESET to check for leftovers.

OK... I was confused because I thought you wanted me to tell you if I wanted to try to clean the computer and we have not done anything since I said that I did. I did not realize that ESET did anything.

Anyway, there still seems to be problems. Norton still is showing attacts with HIGH security risks, see recent log below. My other computers do not have logs that contain high risks. Is there anything else that I should do to this computer?

Also, I am still getting logged out of myYahoo and BleepingComputer. I do not see that cookies are being blocked or temporary files are being deleted. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. I tried restoring the advance settings on the Advanced tab of Internet Options in IE but it still did not work. But something is happening on this computer to cause the problem.

Oh Sorry... I just realized that the list that I exported was filtered on "resolved security risks". So these were before you fixed TDL4.

Any other ideas regarding being logged out of bleepingcomputer and myYahoo?

Thank you,

Michael
