I just installed a new WD400UE Hard Drive in my Toshiba 2515CDS laptop and installed XP Pro on it. For some reason, defragmenter won't analyze or defragment the drive. This also did not allow Bootvis to optomize the system. The computer recgonizes all of the drive (despite the fact that its from 1998), and I installed XP on the original drive before and it defragmented that just fine. Any suggestions?

Does it say anything about running scandisk first? You might have to do that first.

No, but I think I'll try running it anyway. I just click the buttons, and nothing happens.

Ok. Let us know if that affected if Disk Defrag now works.

Yeah, that didn't help. I've kinda given up on it until the 3rd (my next free day).

I also can't run the defragmenter. Every time I try, I get Disk Defragmenter has detected that Ckkdsk is scheduled to run on volume (C:) Please run chkdsk. I do that and nothing helps. Am I doing something wrong when I try to run chkdsk?

Perhaps their is not enough free space on the hard drive to run defrag. Or, Windows doesn't recongnize that there is enough free space. At any rate, see how much free space Windows says there is on that hard drive:

Start > My Computer > right click on C: > Properties

That is one place to start.

This does not go to your point, but I wonder why you need to defrag a new hard drive?

Also MS no longer distributes Bootvis, and I can only guess as to why. I think it may have caused issues so they stopped. That is when I stopped using it.

I'm not sure who you are directing to check for free space. I did that and I have 26.6 GB of free space. I am not trying to defrag a new drive. It has been quite some time since I hace used the utility. How do I clear the Chkdsk message?

Well, first of all I am someone responding to Lanscader, who initiated this thread. Are you Lanscader using a different name? And if you check the time stamps, you will see that I was formulating my resonse at the same time you posted, so I was not responding your your situation specifically.

Happy New Year to you!

Ok...Chipman is not me...anyway...

I have plenty of free space on the drive. 34.2GB free out of 37.2GB total. I guess I wanted to defragment because when I built my desktop and installd my first few programs on it, it was severely fragmented, but I haven't installed any programs of that nature on the laptop yet; I want to make sure that when it is fragmented, I can do something about.

As for bootvis, I guess I don't need it, as its starting up pretty fast anyway. It worked on my desktop about a year ago, but didn't work yesterday, so I guess I'll give it up for now.

You might want to read a thread found at another site found HERE. Lots of good ideas in there. I would suggest reading the entire thread before taking any specific advice from the suggestions found there. Let us know!
