Posted 21 April 2011 - 03:26 PM

I have been fighting this redirect for weeks now. I run "rkill.com", then "exehelper.com", then "Malwarebytes", then "ESET NOD 32 Antivirus". I get nothing on any of them that shows in the logs. Finally I run "Advanced SystemCare" which catches some of the spyware. As you can see this takes a lot of time to go through whenever I get a redirect - which is about every 3 - 30 times (it varies) but always comes back!

I have recently run "HijackThis" but I need help determining which files to delete. Below is the log. Can anyone help me, PLEASE?

Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 1
LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------------
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

NEXT

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable.
  • Double click the exe file.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Hello CatByte,
Attached is the ComboFix.txt that you need.

As a side note, I noticed that ComboFix said that it was deleting "C:/kee.thorpecorp/documents&settings". I have not checked at this point - but this is a critical file for my job and has company history info and files that I must have. Hopefully, if they have been deleted, I can get them back! But I will wait to see if we get rid of this d*** virus first

As Always, THANKS.

I still need to analyze the log, but this is all that was deleted

c:\documents and settings\kee.THORPECORP\WINDOWS

I doubt having a windows folder in the kee.THORPECORP folder is legitimate if you can advise

please do the following:

Reset your Router:

  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you dont know the router's default password, you can look it up. HERE
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.

NEXT

  • Go to Start > Run > type: cmd
  • Press OK or Hit Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type or copy/paste: ipconfig /flushdns (note the space between ..g /f it needs to be there)
  • Hit Enter.
  • You will get a confirmation that the flush was successful.
  • Close the command box.

NEXT

I am sorry, CatByte, but I need to ask - which router, the main one for the house or the one in the laptop? I think you mean the main one for the house...

P.S. you were correct, the windows folder that Combofix deleted was not a critical one - I still have all my necessary files that were there before

yes, the main router for the house, I want to eliminate that as a source of the redirects.

If the router is infected, then you will still get the redirects even if the machine is clean

how is the computer behaving, are there any outstanding issues?

CatByte,
I am sorry it has taken so long to get back with you. I had to go to my daughter & sons' performance in "Fiddler on the Roof".

1. I have reset the router and gotten it back up and running. As a side note - it travel all over the state and get these redirects everywhere so, I would be surprised if it was the router - but it is better to be sure, right?
2. I have flushed the DNS.
3. The log from Malwarbytes is attached but there were no threats to remove.
4. The log from ESET is attached.

Thank you for your patience and understanding AND HELP.

Hi

Please do the following:

Earlier on ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. We're going to use that now.
  • Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

  • When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.
  • If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter
  • It will then prompt you for the Administrator's password. If there is no password, simply press enter.
Otherwise type in the password and then press enter.

  • Next type FIXMBR

  • If it asks if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'
  • Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

CatByte,
As far as I can tell, everything is working fine. I need more time to 'play' with searching around on a topic before I declare 'all clear'.

I really appreciate your time and assistance - you were a big help. I could not have gotten rid of this myself and I doubt that our IT dept could have either!!!

So, if I donate, do you get the money or who?

Best Regards,
Ken E

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Scroll down to where it says JDK 6 Update 25 (JDK or JRE)
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u25 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

Good Morning CatByte,
Happy Easter.
I have downloaded Adobe X and I have deleted old Java and installed JDK 6 Update 25.
Attached are the DDS logs you need.

If I need to do any other steps, I will be at church the rest of this morning and then off to the in-laws for Easter meal. I will be back late this afternoon...

Have a good day,
Ken E
