Would be very grateful for your help.

Caught the Windows Restore virus with false messages about failing hard drives and memory etc. Normal windows wallpaper went black and half of my desktop icons disappeared. Have MBAM, Superantispyware and MacAfee on my computer and it got through the lot.

Scanned first in safe mode, then in normal mode, downloaded Stopzilla and the SZ scans caught trojans, but the problems did not go away. My head of IT at work reviewed my (personal) problem for me as a favour and directed me to your website and Combofix.

I ran Combofix, following the instructions meticulously, and it ran fine. After rebooting my desktop icons came back and I have used the control panel to change the wallpaper back to normal. I thought all was OK ... BUT, on turning on today I get Stopzilla warnings of 2 Hijackers (System Policies - Disable Registry Tools) and I just don't have confidence that my computer is clean. I attach my Combofix log below. I would be very grateful if this could be reviewed for any residual problems, and advise me on anything else I need to do.

Many thanks,
Froebel

Hi m0le,

Sorry for the delay, but been away for a couple of days.

Yes, still need some help. Have managed to do some cleansing, and have found Stopzilla to be effective. However, it reports a steady stream of infections including Vundo A7, Cognac, Explorer Policies spyware, System Policies Disable Registry Tools hijacker and Fake Antivirus H. Today I did another scan and Windows Diagnostic rogue came up - not for the first time.

Seems a lot, so clearly my computer has some vulnerabilities despite all the antivirus and antispyware that I have on it.

I'm running Vista Home Premium and using IE9 (not as good as IE8 and thinking of uninstalling). I had MacAfee, MBAM and Superantispyware on the computer, all of which seemed powerless to stop the infections, and I ran updates and scans regularly. I downloaded Stopzilla afterwards. I have lost the confidence to shop online.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Froebel

Well, it seems a lot is the important phrase here. StopZilla is not the most respected, accurate program. Combofix targets and removes Vundo and cognac and your log shows that neither of these have been removed and that neither are present. I basically wouldn't believe StopZilla's results at all.

If you still have Combofix on your machine please rerun it, agree any updates and post the log. Please do not use the program without supervision, this is a powerful program and can immobilise your system.

If you no longer have Combofix then download it from one of the links below

Hi m0le,

Thanks for your help.

I'm having a bit of a disaster. Last time I ran Combofix it ran smoothly and without a problem. This time - having turned off and exited all the antivirus programmes - it told me at the start that it could detect Stopzilla scanning. I had exited Stopzilla, so I uninstalled the programme and continued with Combofix. It came up immediately and said it couldn't find HIDEC, or something like that, then when the blue screen started it kept on giving a message 'system cannot find message text for message No 0x2331 in the message file for Application.

It ran through most of the stages (much quicker than last time), then it has been stuck on 'Completed Stage 48' for 90 minutes. At the top of the blue screen it does not say Autoscan, it says -c.bat.

So I don't think its going anywhere, and I'm going to have to close down and I will try and run Combofix again tomorrow evening when I get back from work (if I can and it hasn't done damage).

Regards,
Froebel

It doesn't sound like any damage has occurred. StopZilla has interfered with the scan this time, you should have better luck tomorrow.

Hi m0le,

Yes, a lot more straightforward tonight - thanks for keeping with me.

The Combofix log is below. Can I just ask you about antivirus programmes. I have had MacAfee, Superantispyware and MBAM for some time, and downloaded Stopzilla only recently during this episode, yet Stopzilla seems to identified most of the sypware, even if it hasn't cleaned them properly. To be honest, I'm not that impressed with MacAfee either. What would you regard as a good suite of antivirus software, or what would you replace Stopzilla with if I binned it?

Thanks,
Froebel

I recommend some options at the end of the fix, in the final post. I don't rate StopZilla and you don't need it. McAfee is your antivirus and SAS is your antispyware. MBAM is a good on-the-spot scanner. If you want to switch McAfee then I recommend Avast or Antivir for excellent free protection. We can discuss this more later, let's make sure you're clean.

Combofix has come up with one entry. It looks legit but it's a file relating to Trojan FakeAlert.

I think that there's unlikely to be much else but I would like to see an online scan from ESET. That will find the smaller infected files, etc

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
If no log is generated that means nothing was found. Please let me know if this happens.

Hi m0le,

That's the longest scan I've ever done - two and a half hours! Is ESET Smart Security 4 worth having?

Text log below - I think there is more than you might have feared.

Froebel

The ESET scan looks in a large number of places (which is why the scan can take some time). ESET is certainly a recommended antivirus solution at Bleeping Computer if you are looking for a good paid-for suite.

The list is nothing to fear though. In the Java cache are copies of malware which have been inadvertently stored. ESET has removed them now.

How's the PC doing now?

Hi m0le,

It seems to be fine and working well. Can I be confident that it is clear, and use it for electronic purchases?

Would the ESET Smart Security 4 replace MacAfee, or be in addition?

On spyware, do I need anything else besides MBAM and SAS - I have not reloaded Stopzilla and am prepared to write that off if you think it is ineffective. Should I replace it with anything else?

I suppose the main question I have is how did MacAfee, MBAM and SAS allow this lot onto the computer in the first place?

Many thanks,
Froebel

Yes, you can be confident that it's clear now.

ESET would replace the McAfee suite.

You need only one antivirus, one antispyware and an optional (but recommended) firewall. MBAM is an extra stand-alone program. The way that these excellent programs get bypassed is very simple. They are new infections and the security program developers haven't had time to catch, analyse, produce a fix and set the fix into their latest signature to be uploaded by their customers.

We can go ahead and finish this off now:

You're clean. Good stuff! :thumbup2:

Let's do some clearing up

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
(For Vista/Windows 7 please click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run)
  • Now type in Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between "Combofix" and "/")
  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • You will then receive a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.
This will uninstall Combofix and anything associated with it.

We Need to Clean Up our Mess
Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.

  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click Posted Image icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big Posted Image button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's some advice on how you can keep your PC clean

Use and update your AntiVirus Software

You must have a good antivirus. There are plenty to choose from but I personally recommend the free options of Avast and Avira Antivir. If you want to purchase a security program then I recommend any of the following: AVG, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky and ESET Nod32.

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. If you use a commercial antivirus program you must make sure you keep renewing your subscription. Otherwise, once your subscription runs out, you may not be able to update the programs virus definitions.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

Use this next program to check for updates for programs already on your system. Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically, make sure that updates on any that are flagged are carried out as soon as possible

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Install an AntiSpyware Program

A highly recommended AntiSpyware program is SuperAntiSpyware. You can download the free Home Version. or the Pro version for a 15 day trial period.

Installing this or another recommended program will provide spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with an AntiSpyware program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Finally, here's a treasure trove of antivirus, antimalware and antispyware resources

That's it Froebel, happy surfing!

Cheers.

Hi m0le,

You have been fantastic, thank you. My confidence has been restored and I will follow your advice on programmes, updates and scanning.

I will make a donation to show my appreciation, and I hope not to bother you again! However, I know where to come for good advice now.

Kind regards,
Froebel
