I feel defeated. I cannot resolve this issue.
I have random new windows that open in both IE and Firefox, mostly to either Google search page or Yahoo home page.
I cannot get rid of references to AVG being installed in dds. I have removed it with opswat's AppRemover.exe.
I would like to know not only what I should do next, but why. I cannot find any information on what the kernel code sections mean from the gmer log. This is the only place I see any odd stuff.
What am I missing?
I am reinstalling AVG following this post.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

AVG right now is very hard to shut down long enough to run our scans and is actively going after some of our tools - for this reason we are going to have to remove it until we are finished

I would like you to uninstall AVG and run their AVG removal tool

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I ran AVG uninstaller (AVG Remover Utility, v 10.0.0.1322, 1.10MB), which I downloaded from AVG's website. The link from your email resulted in "file not found".
I ran it, rebooted, it ran some more, rebooted, ran combo fix. Combo fix still reported AVG present.
Upon completion of combofix. I rebooted. I reran AVG Remover Util. It didn't ask to restart. I rebooted anyway.
I reran combofix. It requested to update to a newer version, I allowed. Combofix application updated and restarted. It still reported AVG was present.
My computer seems to be the same as before, but I haven't operated it enough to cause a "random window" yet.
Combofix log (from 2nd run) follows.

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 9.1

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]

Be advised: am reinstalling AVG between our sessions. I am uninstalling it prior to following your advice and reinstalling it upon posting my response to this thread.
Based on your recommendation I have removed two P2P programs installed.
I have removed Acrobat Reader 9.1.
Java updated (it is set to auto update monthly), last update was 4/15/11. Do you recommend more frequent updates?
I encountered no problems. No items were shown in MBAM for C:\System Volume Information folder.
The computer is operating the same as it has been. It still produces seemingly random occurances of new windows when IE or Firefox are running. Normally opening to either Google home or Yahoo home.
MBAM and HJT logs follow.

Resetting Router

Let’s try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS
Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

flush the DNS:

Now lets flush the DNS on the computer:

  • click on Start
  • select run

I do not have access to the router. I get wifi service from my landlord. So I cannot pursue that avenue.
I flushed my dns cache.
I do not understand how the router could open a new window on my laptop.
If you feel that the router is issuing a command to my ie or firefox to open a new window, then I can operate via EVDO network for testing. I will completely bypass the existing router.

Without resetting the router, but flushing the cache. Here is the log file.

I am sorry for the delay. I have not yet been able to dedicate the time to following your last post. I will try to get to it in the next day. Since my last post, I have tested different network connections and it DOES seem that the windows only pop up when I am connected to my home (I live at a marina) network provided via wifi as part of my slip lease.
How can the router affect my local browsers? I don't get how that is even possible. But it appears your diagnosis at the router is spot-on. Can you offer some explanation please?
I will follow the previous post instructions as soon as I can. Since I reinstall AVG after our sessions, please let me know if during any of these step you think the "temporarily disable" for AVG will allow me to avoid uninstall/reinstall task. Thanks.

Hello bryandavis

Ok in short - a bad website will run a script maybe java and it will use the browser to login to the router and set the DNS settings to point to a server that does not show the correct web pages

what we might be able to do is set the computers DNS and bypass the settings on the router

I would like you to go here - https://store.opendns.com/setup/computer/ and pick your operating system and change the DNS settings to the ones they have listed

if you want to read up some on DNS settings http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System

Let me know how things go - no need to run the other scan untill we know if this worked or not
