Hi all,
I just checked the action center today because it was showing up with three messages. One of them told me to run the memory diagnostic tool because there could be memory problems present on my computer. I wonder, could that be the reason for other functions of this Inspiron laptop acting odd? And there are definitely other oddities on here such as the fact that the internet will only become usable when I'm on a wireless network. Cabling does no good. Does the memory in the computer, and problems with it, sometimes lead to other seemingly unrelated problems? Thanks for any feedback.

I understand...

Wireless settings are fine and that part works, as you said.

Wired settings are wrong.

It may be something as simple as reinstalling network driver, so let's try it first and see, if it'll help.
Make sure, you reinstall regular network adapter driver, not wireless.

I've done that more than once. I've worked with Dell on this too, and the lady had me install the network driver many a time. A gentleman even came to Gordon College and replaced my motherboard. He was also from Dell.

Just to fix connection issue?
I assume, you had to reinstall Windows?

He only told me to do that if it got that bad. He said to try fixing other problems first before doing anything drastic like that. But the fact that Windows is calling for a memory diagnostic test, do you think that the two have nothing whatsoever to do with each other at all?

I'm little bit confused....
Was the motherboard replaced, or not, yet?

Indeed it has. But I was not instructed to reinstall windows. Not unless things got bad, that is. Basically he replaced the motherboard, and the issue never went away, so I assumed that since Windows is running so sluggishly and so slowly, I figured that the memory diagnostic call and everything else were all connected, so if you fix one, you fix the other.

Try some basic steps....

Make sure, your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Go Start>Settings>Control Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista and 7), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista and 7)
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista and 7):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.

I've done everything except resetting the router or connecting the computer directly to the internet because doing such things is illegal here at Gordon College. They run the network, and you just connect to it. You don't fool with it. I didn't download DAF because you wrote in parentheses that it doesn't work on vista or 7. I have Win 7, so I take it that I can't use it. Winsock fix gave me a few errors. One said that the import registry information was not found, and then the other was a system file not found error. The DNS reset and renew requests simply told me that nothing could be done on the local area connection with the cable unplugged (though it's plugged in, and I've seen other friends of mine connect using my cable). That's the story. But I still think I'm going to run the things that Windows itself is telling me to run to so that it will shut up about it. Because this computer hasn't been acting itself since last month, and it's not just the internet connection causing problems. Programs are slow to open, I get tons of application errors in the event logs as you saw earlier, and stuff crashes all the time too.

The AccessCop Network is just me and my crew.
