Hey, all. I'm new, but have been reading around on the forums here and it seems like a helpful place. I just got this Vista 2011 security virus. It was multiplying itself by the dozens on the Task Manager when I booted my computer in normal mode. It did not allow me to use any internet programs and popped up whenever I tried to open another program of any kind.

I rebooted in safe mode, went on the internet, and looked up ways to get rid of the virus. Many of the articles I found say to remove the file manually and delete the registry entries for the virus. I did find the original file, but when I deleted it, that caused a whole plethora of new problems. Now I can't open security programs and it has disabled a good number of my system files, including system restore. It will not allow me to open most programs---instead an error message comes up: "Application not found." or it prompts me to choose a program to open the program with, but none of those work, either. This is also true of my "regedit"; it keeps telling me "Application not found."

Now I've been fighting with this thing for several hours. I tried downloading MBAM, but when I click to install the program, a window pops up and asks me what program I want to use to open it. Every single program on the list gives me an "Application not found." error message. My own Symantec anti-virus is not working, either; again, "Application not found."

Usually I'm good at figuring these sorts of things out. But, man, when your computer tells you that your system restore is "Application not found.", what can you even do?

Appreciate your help.

I did some further digging and discovered that my applications weren't opening because the file associations were corrupted. I used this: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html to restore the .exe and this seems to help, but I still am not sure what to do from here.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<==. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Then post your DDS and GMER logs as a reply to this topic. Once you have done that I will remove my reply and consolidate the posts so that you retain your correct place in the queue.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the reply and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

1 - Virus would not allow me to back up my system.
2 - Not an issue; I KNOW this is a virus.
3 - Done.
4 - Done.
5 - Firewall was already enabled.
6 - I downloaded and setup this program and clicked "disabled". It never gave me a "Finished" window or anything, so I have no idea if it actually worked.
7 - Done. Unfortunately, the notepad documents came up as gibberish and say something to the effect of "Cannot read file."

I used the page I'd mentioned earlier so I could get my executable files working again and this re-enabled my system restore. I have done the system restore to a point before the infection (I remembered something strange happening a couple days ago on Google and believe that was the point and time of infection). The file containing the virus .exe has been manually removed, the registry has been restored, and so far there have been no further problems.

MOD EDIT: I have consolidated all the posts in this topic to a single post. Please wait until one of our trained malware experts replies to your topic. Thank you. ~Budapest
