Hi,

I'm new here but reading over some other posts, this forum looks great. I was hoping you could help me remove some malware that appears to be infecting my computer.

There are two problems. First, often when I click a link on any site (google, wikipedia, even this site) I am redirected to an Ad site via a google analytics stream. Second, I had a fake AV program (Trojan.FakeAlertRP.Gen) popping up telling me I had a virus. This also cut off my access to the internet by giving me a message that said "Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connection." I think I removed the second problem using the steps you outline for "Remove Antivirus Clean 2011" and using Malwarebytes, so internet access was restored. The first, re-directing problem remains. I also had a little trouble running GMER in regular windows because RKill tool I used on the fake AV problem appears to disable it about 45 mins into the scan. I deleted this tool from my desktop and rebooted in safe mode to run GMER, which worked. (I hope GMER is still useful if run from safe mode).

A little background. I can't seem to get rid of this malware. Both problems first appeared just over a week ago, and at the time I did a full destructive reboot, to return Windows XP to factory settings. Both problems came back within a week.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I have pasted the DDS and GMER files below and attached them. I have also included the MBAM file which lists the removed Trojan.FakeAlertRP.Gen files, in case that might be helpful. Thanks!

DDS

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Hi Gringo,

Thank you so much for volunteering your time to help me with this! I'm having trouble running the programs you suggested, so I wanted to give a quick update on the problem to explain why, and hopefully we can go from there.

The original problem was that my browser was being redirect via google analytics to ad sites whenever I clicked on a link, esp. when opening a new tab. This malware then installed fake anti-virus software on my computer. Initially, I removed the latter with MalwareBytes but the first problem--browser redirection--remained; that is when I came to this site for help and posted the logs. Since then, the fake anti-virus program came back, and I ran MalwareBytes to get rid of it. That problem appears to have gone away, but now whenever I try to open *any* program, I'm given a screen that says "Choose the program you want to use to open this file," with a list of standard programs (Adobe, Explorer, etc). When I try to run the Defogger, for instance, I get this screen. If I instead right-click on the Defogger icon and select "Run" the program opens, but after I hit the "disable" button a screen pops up that says "Unable to open/create file". So--I can't seem to get even Defogger to run. I am also worried that the "Choose program" is caused by the malware, so if I select any program, it will get under the malware's control.

So: I am having trouble at this point even opening programs in regular windows. I can still open programs without problems in safe mode. Will these logs still be effective if I run them from there?

Thanks again for your time and help with this.

Hello

I would like you to download these programs if you don't have them yet to the desktop and have them ready to use .

RKill - exeHelper - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

After you have them on your desktop restart your computer and as soon as you can start with RKill

:Rkill:

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

Once the tool has run, do NOT reboot the machine,
If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

Scan with exeHelper:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Let me have these logs and let me know how the computer is doing

Hi Gringo,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Now, I regret to report that the same window pops up when I try to run Rkill: I'm given a screen that says "Choose the program you want to use to open this file," with a list of standard programs. Usually I can close this "choose a program" window, but I can't when I try to open Rkill--it just stays open. No command window pops up. After I couldn't open the program, I tried restarting to click it faster on reboot. A couple of times I was given this message: "Error: Some files could not be created. Please close all applications, reboot windows, and restart this application," which I ignored, since no other programs were running. Once, a window popped up, with the heading "WinRAR Self-Extracting Archiving" and a list of files, for instance:
Skipping proxy check
skipping swreg.exe
extracting userinit.exe
extracting rkill.bat
extracting h\iexplore.exe
extracting s.inf

and so on. My options with this window are simply to "close" it. What now?

Hi Gringo,

Sorry about that--I thought I had to run the Rkill first. But you're right, of course: the exeHelper gave me access to my programs again. Then I ran Rkill, followed by Malwarebytes, as instructed. Thanks for your patience. Below, I post the logs for Rkill, exeHelper, and MalwareBytes. Since this freed my system up to run the Defogger and other scans that you wanted me to run (DDS and RKUnhooker) I have also posted those logs below, as per your original request.

As for the issues, I now have access to programs by clicking on them, as I said. The redirect problem with the browser that started all this trouble is still happening, though.

Okay here are the logs:

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Rkill was run on 04/26/2011 at 10:55:53.

Hello

Most of the time you do need to run RKill first.

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

So, I ran Combofix and the log is below. Here is an update on changes and current functionality.

Functionality: I am still getting re-directed to ad-sites, although less often, and no longer through google analytics. So the problem is still there, but (at this point) in a milder form, in the sense of being less frequent.

Changes: Firefox is a little slower. On my settings prior to running Combofix, I had to right click to open links in a new tab in Firefox , but now Firefox sometimes does this automatically--it doesn't appear to vary with the webpage I'm using. I've also tried to download Avast--both before posting to this site and after using combofix. In both cases, whatever malware is active prevents me from downloading the free version--I click on it, but nothing happens. I can, however, download the pay-for version--which I haven't done.

Some other stuff I noticed. Before coming here with this problem, I simply did a full system restore/destructive reboot, twice, but each time the problem came back within a week or two. As the version of Norton that came with my laptop is expired, I tried to remove it upon system restore using the add/remove program, but Windows won't let me remove it. I get a message that says "Could not write value EP to key \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SPBBCDrv\Parameters". After this message, my effort to remove Norton is terminated. I don't know if this is relevant, but it might be, so I mention it. Another thing I noticed: Combofix came up with an infected file from the D: drive--which is a separate drive used *only* for system restore, not regular operations.

At any rate, here is the log. Thanks again for helping me work through this problem.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hi Gringo,

The minute I opened your post and started reading the "Internet Security" virus came back and prevented me from running any programs. I used Rkill to terminate it and MalwareBytes to remove it. I then ran the TDSSKiller, as requested. The TDSSKiller log is below. I have also posted the most recent MalwareBytes Log, if it helps.

Print out these instructions to use while in the Recovery Console:

1.Restart your computer.
2.Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start.
3.Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4.You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press 'Enter'.
5.At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded entries, and press 'Enter'

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0
[/list]
rerun combofix when complete and let me know how things are when you complete both tasks

Hi Gringo,

Okay, I'm not sure I did this correctly. I did the steps for Microsoft Windows Recovery Console that you outlined. It asked me if I was sure I wanted to do this, and I typed "Y" for yes. It then gave me the following message, "New Masterboot record has been successfully written". Then on a new line, it presented me with the "C:\\Windows" prompt again. Then nothing happened--just the DOS-like screen with the "C:\\Windows". After waiting a bit, I re-entered the prompt, with the same result. After waiting to see if it did any thing, and nothing happening, I restarted and ran Combofix again.

The problem is still here. When I returned to this site to clicked on the text box to enter this message, a new window opened redirecting me to an Ad site via googleanalytics. Routine google searches also take me to ad-sites.

The combofix log is below, in case that helps.

Thank you for your patience and persistence in helping me with this. This sucker is like a zombie--everytime you kill it, it comes back...
