Hello All, this site is great! could use some more help. This is my first post, and i'm no computer guy, so talk to me like i'm about 6 years old! Here is what i've done so far.

Got "Windows Diagnostic" virus, it was that scareware stuff, telling me that my hard drive is over heating, and a million pop ups and that my world is imploding.

I followed your instructions in the tutorial and it seemed to get rid of it. no more pop ups or warnings.

After removal all my folders were missing. Gone, the desktop only had like 3 icons, like a new computer.

I ran a system recovery to an earlier date, everyting reappeared, all my folders and icons are there, but they are all empty. All my folders with files for my vinyl sticker cutter are empty,my movie folders, picture folders, every folder is there but empty. If I do a search for a file, its finds it, and it shows the location of it, which shows it in its proper folder, but if you go there.. no files. Again if I search for it, it finds it and I can open the file, so I know they are there somewhere.

Also seem to have a redirector thing too. If i use google, and search for say "bleeping computer" and click on one of the choices, it take me somewhere else like southwesttrainging dot com and to computershopper dot com but if I type bleepingcomputer into the address bar direct it goes there.

Any and all help would be great!

In summary id like to:

1.Find all my files and get them back into their folders
2. remove the redirector
3. speed up old computer it boots up slow, and there are processes running that i have no idea if they are legit or what.

thanks everyone! Tell me what to do!
Much appreciated.

Hello, I am 6 years old ,so I will help you
first go here and see if this shows your files..
How to see hidden files in Windows

Next to clean we will run these

>>>> Download this file and doubleclick on it to run it. Allow the information to be merged with the registry.

RKill....Use this new one as yours is outdated.

Download and Run RKill
  • Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again. Or if rebooting is required run it again.

If you continue having problems running rkill.com, you can download iExplore.exe or eXplorer.exe, which are renamed copies of rkill.com, and try them instead.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller. will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.
