internal speakers won't change volume

The sound on my laptop is stuck at 100% and has been for a while. external volume controls don't work,( the external controls are a slider system) and when I try to change the volume in the computer, the volume will just steadily rise back up to 100%. I'm not sure how this happened but it is a nuisance and assistance with it would be greatly appreciated

a little info on the laptop please ,what OS version are you using ,ie:winxp/vista/win7/ linux ect ect.
make and model of laptop
