I really hope you guys can help me. I normally use a Sony Vaio running Vista Premium Home Edition (64 bit). At present time, that computer is out for repairs for the 2nd time because of whatever this virus/malware is. It has repeatedly crashed my computer and I have yet to identify it. I am currently using an Acer Aspire running Windows 7 (64 Bit) and it has the exact same problem the Sony had and all I did was plug it in and boot it up.
The Sony started with the infamous Google Redirects to random sites that were obviously not valid, and ended up completely locking me out of the internet by changing my dns server/settings and eventually blue screened so I took it in for repairs. I had zero knowledge of about 95% of any of the info I am now writing about when this first started, so, if nothing else comes from this, I have learned ALOT.

I brought it home after repair #1 and had the exact same problem, google redirects, no internet connection, etc. and it ended up crashing, so I sent it back in and in the meantime before I even thought about hooking up the Acer I am using now, I actually switched Internet Service providers because a friend told me it could be in the CMos of the computer or DSL modem, and it was cheaper to replace the modem and router as a first step.
I plugged in the Acer and made sure not to connect it to the modem or router, again, kept the router powered off, it hadn't even been configured yet, I wanted to get the firewall set up on the computer, then run the install disk for the router and issue the security settings, set up my network, etc. once I knew the firewall was on.
I turned it on, and there we go again, McAfee pops up asking me to register. I right click on it and notice it has an odd filename path and it ends with .exe so I start checking the other shortcuts on the desktop, and the same exact thing. All of them, mostly image or media files do not end in .jpg but rather .exe. Windows Firewall was locked for advanced settings by McAfee. I eventually put two and two together to figure out these were all svchosts and other .exe filenames running as processes or services under task manager.

I have scanned the computer with every scanner or tool I can think of. They find no infection but I also notice the files always have an Unknown Publisher once I download them and I can't download directly to my desktop. It always downloads to a temp first even when I specify it to download directly to my desktop.
I go in to update Windows and every uipdate installs except for the Malicious Software removal tool and the updates for MS XML Core Services SP2 show failed. I found a drive in my computer that starts with // and all of the websites I go to have the same thing in the address bar. Also, there is a hidden file named $Recycle.Bin in that non letter drive and I am unable to access it, but I believe that is where the infected file is located. The Apple products also have the same // when going to any website in Safari and the Samsung did as well.
My Windows Defender is disabled and I am unable to enable it. I still have the redirects but now they are to sites that actually almost look legitimate but I know they aren't after I click on a random link. They are image files that have Java Scripts attached. I think. I have reset my modem, router, repeatedly issuing new passwords to my network, and nothing is working. I installed a different firewall the other day and noticed my computer connecting to random IP addresses, and IP addresses connecting to my computer through these SVCHosts. The Sony isn't ready for me to bring home yet, but I have this Acer that I have to return since it is a loaner and I really can't handle sending the Sony back for another Operating System restore and I don't want to give back the Acer in this condition. Please let me know if you can possibly help me with this, I am honestly at my wit's end. Thank you.

I have an update brut it's been nearly impossible to even get back to this page because this trojan.win32.Virut blocks any access to any support forums. Plus in the meantime I had to do a system recover to Factory settings. Although it didn't get rid of the infection, at least I still have the system recovery option available on my machine because I am sure thst will be the next option to be disabled by this nasty litle mess. Since I have been dealing with this for a few months on different machines, I have tried many different things in an attempt to somehow run a clean virus scan. Most of us know it isn't possible to download any antivirus files to the system because the malware disables it. I found Comodo's site a couple of days ago, and decided to request the assistance of their free tech support to download the file to my computer. I had to first download GeekBuddy (their remote assistance software). After trying repeatedly, the GeekBddy file downloaded and I had Dennis connected remotely to my PC. He downloaded Comodo Internet Security to my PC, and he then launched it and told me to let him know whe n the scan completed. 124,000 files scanned later, my PC showed no infected files. Dennis asked if their was anything else he could assist with and I reiterated that I have an infection, it's just a matter of determining what it is. As soon as he disconnected from my PC, the antivirus database started throwing an error at every attempt to update. So I got back on with GeekBuddy, this time speaking to Nick. I asked him to please verify my antivirus was up to date. He did see the several errors from the database not updating, he had no explanation as to why. He did however seem to have an excuse for every question I asked. Why do I keep seeing a blank page when trying to get on the Internet, or sometimes while the Internet it open? I have a volume in my system that doesn't have a drive letter assigned, and conveniently that same drive that doesn't exist ended up on my exclusions list for the virus scan and I know I didn't add it. After I began to question my sanity, I thanked Nick and disconnected. After several quick attempts of toggling from option to scan screen, I successfully launched a scan that included my app data file folder as well as a $recycle.bin fokder that remains hidden so I'm not sure how I managed it, but it hit a threat count of 1321 files and scanned over 1,250,000 files on my PC. The $Recycle.Bin folder was full of temporary files that showed as extracted. I delete and they come right back in to my system which makes a lot of sense now as ton why this infection isnsondifficult to dealnwith. Commodo detected win32.Virutttt in one file and root kit.blank page based on the files in the $recycle.bin folder. Almost as if it is an outgoing file folder. Unfortunately, that detection sent my computer to an early demise because after that, every single protection tool I had on my system no longer worked. The file would not open or it would just freeze or throw an error. I gave up and went for the system recovery option and started back there. As of now, I am unable to do any searches on the Internet or on my IPad or IPod for root kit or virutt information as it is blocked by the Trojan. I have the dreaded blank page in Safari on the IPod Touch and the IPad, and earlier Safari had redirected itself to a page I looked at a month ago talking about Virut making a comeback. Also, just found out my next door neighbor has the exact same infection as well. We have the same ISP but 2 different router and modem models. Mine is Cisco Linksys E1000 series and hers is a 2wire for the router, but both use the same dns settings and same IP configuration so I think that is how I was getting the infection back without ever hooking the new computer up to my network, maybe from her computer? I do know that the Apple Devices definitely have this infection and I am hoping a reset of both devices will fix that problem, but I honestly don't know where to go from here. I have read a couple of articles saying this root kit cannot be cleaned because of it's IRC capabilities, which I have seen first hand with it jumping into every new PC I plug in, but what does that mean then? Do I just give up on having Internet at my location? No, I think I will either figure this out with your assistance or spend a lot of time reseArching andnrunning different tools until I do.

  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.

Hi Elise, I appreciate you getting back to me, I understand how busy you all are. Below is the most recent DDS report, I ran it a few minutes ago. Basically I am still having issues with several noticeable areas of my computer. Specifically redirects continue, some Microsoft updates install, while security updates fail. I am now seeing this quite often, I will attempt to delete a file and if it isn't locked, then I will receive an error saying unable to delete as file is open by another user on this computer. I'll right click and choose open file location and it will take me to the Publc Downloads folder, which I try to avoid because although I have my network set up not to share any files or folders, I know something has compromised my computer so I don't trust that my files aren't being accessed. Tonight I attempted to login to my ISP's website so I could download MCafee Security as it is included with my service and I could see the redirect attempt at the bottom of IE. Eventually it took me to a spanish download page for McAfee, and any time I attempt to download something like a driver update or if I attempt to go in to defrag, my computer screen will turn a lighter shade and my mouse drags very slowly and then the computer or the program I am trying to access will freeze completely until I am forced to restart IE altogether. I did have a program called regrun and regreanimator installed and it ran at startup and it would alert me to any suspicious files that attempted to add an entry to the registry. I have sinced uninstalled it because it no longer showed the publisher as greatis, it shows unknown publisher so I didn't want anything attempting to modify my registry if it wasn't from the correct publisher. Also, when I click on start, the menu displays the programs most recently accessed/used and they are not programs or tools that I currently use. Magnifier, snipping tool, youcamwebtray are just a few of the ones listed and this list changes constantly and 50% of the time, it's not a file that I have accessed. .Please let me know what to do next, below and attached are the files you requested. Again I appreciate all of your help.

Alicia

Hi again,

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Hi, sorry it has taken me so long to respond, I have been fighting with my computer for the last several days trying to download a valid publisher version of Combofix. I was finally able to run it tonight. I am posting both of the files that opened, I believe they are identical, but one popped up as Combofix and one popped up as Log so I didn't want to risk losing any vital information in between the two files. Thanks so much.

How are things running at this point? If you still experience redirects, please run also the following.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

regards, Elise

I am still having problems downloading. 90% of the time, UAC pops up with do you trust this file and the publisher shows Unknown and I almost have to trick the computer by reattempting to save in random different locations until I get one to actually save with the correct publisher. Combofix gave me the worst trouble and at one point I saved it without realizing it was unknown and attempted to run it and received an error saying, this copy of Combofix is corrupt. You may have a patch filing virus like Virut! Also once I do run or open a file that saved correclty, if I go back into it at a later time, it has been changed and no longer shows the correct publisher and/or it just will not open. I am also not able to access certain files/folders in the computer, it will tell me access denied or unable to open/delete file as it is currently open by another user on this computer. I only own one computer, there are no other users and I also noticed today after right clicking and going to open Windows Explorer, above my CDrive, there is a Library listed that has folders that are named Pictures, Documents, Music and Videos. When I right click on the documents folder, it shows the following 3 options under the Share With tab:

Nobody which shows as locked
HomeGroup (Read)
HomeGroup (Read/Write
)

If I click on Nobody, my User name pops up
If I click on either of the HomeGroup options, it says this computer cannot connect to a HomeGroup.
Also I ran a Belarc Advisor and it shows that there are no network drives on my computer and I do not have any extra networks listed in my connections. When I initially set my Network up this last time, it was using a wireless router with a dsl modem. I have since turned off and removed my wireless router and am only using my wired DSL modem because I don't feel like I have a secure connection on my computer and I also think that is why I am having so many problems with other devices that I connect to my WiFi network.
Is it possible that the above shows Nobody because I removed the Wireless router? I am not completely familiar with Networks, but I do know I chose Home as my network type and it makes sense to me that if something has accessed my computer that way, it would explain alot of the issues I've been having.
Also, I have an application called NetShare that I downloaded awhile back and I ran it today and it shows the following under Shared Resources for my computer:

$IPC Remote IPC
C:\ Default Share
$Recycle.Bin Remote Admin

I only see the $Recycle.Bin file folder occasionally and I am not able to open it or view anything in it.

Last thing, with the issues regarding Windows Updates showing as failed on my computer, I researched a little further and the specific updates were all related to Adobe, Internet Explorer, regarding Java and seem to be indirectly related to the most recent exploit/Microsoft Security Bulletin that was published on April 12th. I have tried downloading all of the fixes for the exploits but again, the computer will lock up when I try to download certain things relating to updates or virus protection.

Would this even be a virus situation or more of a hacker situation? Below is my TDSS report, it didn't show anything infecte
d.

One more note, on the Belarc report, I am listed as a User connected to a WORKSTATION that is running on a Samba Server
Below that lists my DSL Modem and there is nothing listed as far as User Name. I looked up Samba Server and they're website http://samba-server.net says:

Samba is used on open-source-based systems ( linux, *BSD ) to communicate with Microsoft-based systems. Samba can also be used to replace your Microsoft-based domain controllers ( PDC )

Hi, for the network issue, I recommend first to contact your Internet Provider to ask if they can clarify that.

, UAC pops up with do you trust this file and the publisher shows Unknown

This is pretty normal for downloaded files. Windows tells you this file is unsigned, that doesn't mean automatically its bad.

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE
-------------------------------------------
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

regards, Elise

Below is my MBam log, which shows up clean, but I wanted to let you know that my brother ran an online Scan using Kaspersky's scanner and it came back with a Trojan.win32.agent2.byu result. There is no log file anywhere on my computer, which isn't that odd to me after everything else I've seen, but I did find another member's forum post regarding this malware, and after reading what he wrote, I don't feel as crazy as everyone was making me think I am :) (Sorry, this has been such a stressful ordeal, it still is). Please let me know if you would like to read his post as he explains very technical aspects of the capabilities of this infection and how he figured out the source is coming from the BIOS. Unfortunately, I did not see an end removal result so I hope it was taken care of.

Thanks for all of your help again, sorry it took me so long to get back with you. I've been having computer problems :)
