Posted 13 April 2011 - 03:25 PM

Late at night on April 5th something got through to my computer. A window popped up and it showed a scan being ran. Some sort of warning that I needed protection for my computer. It would not let me scan with Malwarebytes or any scan program that I have. I finally went into a safemode and was able to use Malwarebytes. Here are the findings below.

April 5th Malwarebytes (windows safemode) full scan

Files Infected:
c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\ibp06511fdfnh06511\ibp06511fdfnh06511.exe (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
c:\documents and settings\Jay\application data\Sun\Java\deployment\cache\6.0\32\30399960-3218eef1 (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

April 7th Malewarebytes regular full scan

Files Infected:
c:\system volume information\_restore{216ea052-0f13-4fe7-8d8e-1d119305b75d}\RP46\A0001913.exe (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

All Malwarebyte scans "now" show (No malicious items detected) Also scanned with spybot search and destroy. Nothing found.

My CPU usage is running high again. Up to 100% so I'm guessing that is whats causing my videos to freeze up. Computer is very slow. Browsers are taking a long time to load pages. My date and time was wrong for some reason. I was able to get it to sync after several failed tries. I updated firefox to version 4.0 the other day. It's slower than the older version. For some reason I can't remove firefox at all. Something won't let it be removed. I was going to do a completely new firefox install. But it won't remove from windows. Also my DSL modem isn't working correctly now. I stay online but my modem lights are blinking from time to time, so that slows down my internet browsing. Luckily I didn't have much trouble with the modem today, so I was able to gather all the info needed.

Not sure if I should have even tried to do a system restore, but I tried to restore back to before the night all this happened, but it won't restore to any date before April 5th anyway. NO restore was done.

I don't have any idea on how to fix my problems. I think the Trojan.FakeAlert is removed, since my latest scans show clear. But the computer isn't running correctly now. Hoping someone can help me! :)

I ran defogger. It said it was able to complete but had some sort of error. Here's the report it gave me.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Here is the information you requested. Still having the same problems. Very slow browsers, videos freeze or stop completely, internet DSL modem will blink every once in a while but I usually don't get bumped offline. I let the modem settle down and its ok for a little while. Whats causing this I do not know. It seemed as if windows updates were not downloading but I am getting them now. Something is causing the computer to act sluggish and unresponsive. I'm also wondering if I messed something up in firefox. I was going to remove it and do a fresh install but it will not remove for some reason. Thank you for the help!

Do you have these problems only in Firefox or also in Internet explorer (to test firefox, you can click Start > Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Firefox (safe mode), this will start FF without add-ons).

Is only the connection slow or the computer as a whole?

Both IE and firefox run slow. Until the night of the 5th when the trojan.fakeAlert popped up, everything was working well. In both browsers. Now videos freeze and stop. My DSL modem is acting weird also. I upgraded to the newest version of firefox. It seems to run slower than before. I'm still wondering why I can't remove firefox. I thought a new clean install might help. I had trouble before with too many items running at startup. My CPU usage was very high. It seems to be running high again and the machine has some other problem that is causing the modem to blink. It it acts up, the only thing I can do is wait for it to settle down, then I can change browser pages. But its slow to begin with, so the new problem makes it even worse. I really don't know what to do. Thank you for the help! Jay

Hi again, please reboot in safe mode with networking and let me know if you experience the same issue there.

regards, Elise

I did the reboot in safe mode with networking. I got on fancast/hulu and played a video. In both IE and firefox. Both played the video, but with no audio. The screen was larger but looked about the same though. It froze up once. Not sure what caused it. The CPU usage was lower and only had 17 processes. Now in normal boot up its running 36 processes. It was 37 when I started this message. Usually 34 are running I think. It was running 32 a while back if I remember correctly. Not sure any of this info will help. I have no idea. The modem didn't seem to be acting up while in safe mode. But I wasn't on long during safe mode. Thank you for the help! Jay

Please download a new copy of combofix and run it (instructions see below).

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

The new combofix log is too large to attach and too long to paste. What should I do? Thank you for the help! Jay

Hi, how are things running at this point?
Do you have specific software installed for your DSL connection (for example from a CD provided by your isp)?

regards, Elise

Hello, Yes I did have a CD browser program loaded, but SBC Yahoo stopped using the program some time ago. I've just been using IE or firefox ever since. Its worked fine until the night of the 5th when all this happened. I just got on SBC's website and downloaded IE 8 for Yahoo but it isn't working any better. The modem is still acting weird and slowing my connection down. I really don't know what to do. Thank you for the help! Jay
