HI I'm having all sorts of PC problems. 27 March I realised my PC was infected when I was plagued with pop ups from a Window Recovery virus saying I had all sorts of critical hard drive errors. It had hidden my c drive files and task manager but I was able to restore my PC to a point 1 week prior. That didnt work so I took it back another week which seemed to work. However, after a day or so I started getting a Microsoft Windows popup which says "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" which I haven't been able to resolve. I've also got a google redirect virus because when I google I get sent to random other websites, often youtube but also ad sites and new browser sessions start up of their own accord. My PC also now shuts down unexpectedly and randomly, or alternatively freezes completely.

MSE doesn't find any viruses, nor does Malwarbytes. Today I've tried to update MSE but it wouldn't so I've had to uninstall both and reinstalled MSE, rebooted and rescanned. Still nothing. SHould also mention, MSE keeps switching itself off. Hope you can help me please.

PS Having trouble attaching the files so will attach what I can to this post.
PPS Since posting this I've looked at what Defender is doing and it was allowing some odd exceptions through - zbvbhaob and mlxdobhb - which both live in my temp folder and are setup.exe files. I've unchecked these exceptions just in case they are part of the problem.

Hi there, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I've run the tools you asked for and attached the scripts as reqested. In addition to the original info I gave earlier my PC gave up the ghost this afternoon whilst on Facebook, it just shut itself down and displayed a blue screen with all sorts of warnings (something about having shut itself down to protect itself). It froze so I left it and eventually it restarted but with no desktop icons. I rebooted again and the icons came back.

thanks again for helping me.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi, yes, I'm having trouble running Combofix. Each time I try my PC completely freezes and I have to switch off at the mains. I can't access Task Manager to see what's running and what's not either.

Thanks for helping, T

Hi there. Combofix ran fine this time. I've attached the Combofix log file for you.

I've had a bit of trouble gaining access to the internet via my PC as all my usual links (desktop, shortcuts) to IE and Firefox have been disabled and marked for deletion.

The GREAT news is that I've tried and tested Google and no more redirecting - yippee!!!!

smiley happy face :)

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Hi there Gringo, I've done most of what you asked but couldn't get Java to open so haven't been able to update or delete temp files from there.

I ran the TFC twice. The first time it was partially through running and a Microsoft Windows box popped up saying TFC has stopped working and my PC froze. I had to reboot. I ran it again and it completed this time but immediately it finished I got the Microsoft Windows error again.

Here is the log from Malware.....

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acer Empowering Technology Monitor] C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\SysMonitor.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eDataSecurity Loader] C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\eDataSecurity\eDSloader.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WarReg_PopUp] C:\Acer\WR_PopUp\WarReg_PopUp.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acer Tour Reminder] C:\Acer\AcerTour\Reminder.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Mobile-based device management] %windir%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe
