Go to Start...Run...and type in "SFC.EXE /SCANNOW" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Have your XP installation CD handy in case it asks for it. If it does ask for it, visit Windows Update immediately afterward to ensure that it hasn't messed up your update status.

It says:

"Windows cannot find 'SFC.EXE/SCANNOW'.Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

Not good - try this:
Go to Start...Run...and type in "C:\Windows\system32\SFC.EXE /SCANNOW" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Have your XP installation CD handy in case it asks for it. If it does ask for it, visit Windows Update immediately afterward to ensure that it hasn't messed up your update status.
