Hello My name is Kieran from Wales in the UK. Firstly I am not 100% amazing with computers so please forgive me if I struggle with any instruction. I shall explain the course of events that leads me here for help. Ive been trying for about 2 days now!

1. XP Security 2011 malware - managed to remove via guides from the site and malwarebytes.
2. No infections according to malware bytes thereafter
3. Realised I was unable to open MS Security Essentials my usual anti virus program which has been wokring fine for a long time
4. Able to open and update in safe mode with networking but cannot turn on or scan
5. Noticed I am getting heavily redirected while browsing on Firefox
6. Noticed some other irregularites when shutting down and powering up, also my blue and green (XP bar type thing) occasionally changes to grey (like old school Win 95)

So today I have been running numerous tool to try and sort the problem. I ran ATF cleaner. Updated and ran MBAM full scan It found 20 threats but cleaned them - then rebooted
Then ran TDSS as I was getting 'googleads' things appearing in my browser. TDSS picked something up and removed.
Tried a few online scanners earlier, all of which picked nothing up.

Ive now gone through the tutorial on this site and have the logs to post.
I am in my final 3 weeks of university and in the middle of writing my dissertation so this has been a rather unwelcomed problem.
Thanks very much in advance!
Kieran

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Do you happen to recognize this folder?

C:\31dbd8840384f7e19a7c

Did you open this ports?

"25513:TCP" = 25513:TCP:*:Enabled:spport
"25685:TCP" = 25685:TCP:*:Enabled:spport
"16718:TCP" = 16718:TCP:*:Enabled:spport
"18537:TCP" = 18537:TCP:*:Enabled:spport

Hello! Thanks once more for the help!

I do not recognize the above folder. When I go into it there are two more folders 'amd64' and i386' each folder contains seven similar icons.

I do not know much or anything about ports so I would have to say that I have nothing to do with opening those ports! lol

I entered the text into the OTL program and after rebooting it gave me this log....

Files\Folders moved on Reboot...

Registry entries deleted on Reboot...

So far so good but things havent been so smooth since....I tried running combofix, it starting loading closed all other windows and then gave me the message

"Combofix cannot run while avg is installed. This is due .......please uninstall AVG or use another tool" "OK"

...and then it closes.

So I checked my programs no AVG, checked my control panel> add remove programs > no AVG.

Rebooted tried combofix again, same message.
Did a search and found quite a few folders under the name of AVG such as 'AVG9' and 'AVG10.' I recall now having AVG some time ago and having a lot of trouble removing it and in the end I cant be sure but I think I may have used a removal tool. So Im guessing this is causing all the trouble....sorry!

Update on my machine.....much better, seems to be running quicker, so far I havent had a google redirect and also my MS security essentials is automatically coming up when the pc turns on! I have left it turned off though as you asked.

Sorry for the lengthly post. Thank you!
Kieran

Hi Kieran!

I do not recognize the above folder. When I go into it there are two more folders 'amd64' and i386' each folder contains seven similar icons.

Okay. That folder is most likely fine.

I do not know much or anything about ports so I would have to say that I have nothing to do with opening those ports! lol

Okay. I'm probably going to suggest you close those ports. I can close them using a script.

Please try to run this tool to remove any remedies of AVG and then try to run ComboFix again:

AVG Removal Tool

Download and save AVG Removal Tool to your desktop

Run it to remove AVG. After this, please restart your computer.

I have run this tool and the only security app it finds is Malwarebytes....nothing for AVG and interestingly nothing for MS security essentials.
Sorry I can see this is probably going to be hard work for you!

Currently I am not expericing any problems. PC appears to be running nice and quick as it used to. Google is not redirecting me and my MS security essentials appears to be ready to rock and roll, although Ive yet to turn it on and update.

Can I ask you about these ports you mentioned earlier? Could they be dangerous?
Thanks!
Kieran

Hi Kieran!

It's possible that those ports can be an issue.

I'm going to close them to be on the safe side, but before I do that I'm going to ask that you create a backup of your registry first:

Back-Up Registry
First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:

regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg

Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

Did you attempt to run ComboFix after running the OTL fix?

OTL Fix

We need to run an OTL Fix
  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.
    :Services
    :OTL

    :Reg

    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\sp.dll_
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    :Commands
    [CreateRestorePoint]

  • Push Posted Image
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click the OK button.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
  • If the machine reboots, the log will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.
