Hi Gringo,

Thanks in advance for your assistance Gringo!

What you will be looking at is a new Gateway laptop that has been wiped and the factory 5 disc image reinstalled.

The only application that has been installed is a Commodo firewall and the apps you request. I have been bringing it to work and turning it on for a week now while awaiting your response. I have been studying this for 3 months and am now at my wits end... I have 6 computers that have variations of what is going on with this system and are out of commission INCLUDING A MACBOOK PRO. Yes, a variant of this seems to be entrenched in my Mac Book. Anyway....

I will follow your instructions immediately and get your take on this system. One thing I found out over the weekend, I wanted to copy three or four Windows system files to send them up to virustotal as their sizes were way off from Microsoft's spec. Well, I COULD NOT FIND THEM! I have "show hidden files and directories enabled" and it looks like there are two separate file systems co-existing on the system. This makes sense as there is no scanner that has picked up on anything with the exception of GMER finding a rootkit last week. It cannot find it now... I know this thing creates a new search index AFTER deleting the one that is created before first boot.

Let me get these logs up....

Thanks again and look forward to working with you. I will follow your instructions to the word...

It is my home network.

I have been through three routers. They are connected to the Internet through an RCA cable modem (6 meg connection).

They have all been hacked and the firmware altered. The last one I was using was a Cisco NVS4000 4 port Gigabit Security Router.

I am now using an old Linksys WRT54-GS wireless router that I reflashed the firmware with Tomato to guard against Telnet and SSH logins.

Let me run this script on my current setup...

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I set this up so I did not have to use the Gateway we are working on for communication. I am on a work HP laptop at present.

I ran Combofix after disabling Commodo.

It ran without incident for about 15 minutes detailing stages in a DOS box. When done, it rebooted the system and I logged back in. It continued for about 5 minutes and then created a log file file and displayed it and stated where th file is. I closed the file and it closed the DOS box.

Where we are now is strange. When I move my cursor to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, it changes to the spinning Windows activity animation. I cannot open Start or any file icons I have pinned to it. I cannot cntrl-alt-delete to task manager either.

I do have some icons on my desktop it looks like I may be able to execute. What would you like me to do? I will post the Combofix log as soon as I can get to it.

...hard reset?

Okay, I had to hard reset and restart Windows. I logged in and started the Commodo firewall and anti-malware app. What is happening right now is astounding. Commodo sandboxed well over 40 files and counting and is still catching about one file a minute trying to access a protected device (wireless network adapter). What is wild, is that these are all Windows trusted apps and drivers and trusted third party drivers like the SynAptics Touchpad etc. The problem being though, is that these files are needed for Win 7 operation. So it looks like this malware installed a Commodo FW and SP agent to obfuscate all the system files and drivers that this nasty installed. This is verified by the fact that I disabled both before I ran Combofix and the log says it is still enabled.... Combofix deleted the agent and Commodo is now exposing all the bogus files.

SearchIndexer.exe
NOTEPAD.exe
wermgr.exe
sdiagnhost.exe
srrstr.dll
msdt.exe
inetcpl.cpl
dllhost.exe
trustedinstaller.exe is trying to create processes etc....

Commodo just got quiet.... I checked it's log and explorer.exe created a process targeting Commodo cfp.exe UGH...

The machine should be fully compromised soon.... It's working at it.

I have a feeling it is comodo going crazy

lets check with an online scanner and see what pops up

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hi Gringo,

I followed your instructions. I disabled Commodo and Internet connectivity has returned to the Atheros WLAN card. (The NIC card driver, which had an Atheros driver on it originally, was replaced with an unsigned Broadcom driver by Explorer after we ran Combofix, so it was untrusted and sandboxed by Commodo).

I went to ESET and performed an online scan. It came up with nothing. (I knew it would but was hoping it would find something)

Since Combofix did a brief cleanup of the machine, it allowed me to view what was being put in place to compromise the machine. It is complex, and comes at you from several locations it seems. I was an Internet software programmer for years, so that helps a little at figuring out the logic.

At least I now have a list of all compromised files being deployed. I made a text file from the registry. I also took a screenshot of the exit point from which data is retrieved from the machine. If you want me to post them, I will. I'm still searching for the manifest file that propagates Task Scheduler with roughly 70 tasks....

1. It's all about setting up the machine to be remotely accessed to copy data stored in usually protected areas and compressing it and encrypting it and sending it out via BITS while remaining invisible.

What do you suggest? I just want this thing cleaned. Is there such a thing as malware that writes to the disk from the BIOS?

Hi Gringo,

What would you like to try next?

Thanks,

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTListIt.txt in your next reply.

Gringo,

Do you want me to download, install, and run it from Safe-mode? I'm afraid that if I install it, the system will disable it before it runs. I guess I can always re-enable it in the registry.

Thanks.

Bon
