Hello. Thank you in advance for helping me.
I was directed to post in this forum after "Boopme" assisted me in the "Am I infected? What do I Do" posts.
After many scans (Rkill, MBAM, TDSS, etc) I am still getting those frustrating search redirects in Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc in both IE and Firefox.
I reset my Netgear router and changed the default password. I also have a Westell 6100 modem from verizon but it was already protected with a unique username and password.
I originally had the Whitesmoke infection but all is clean now, just the darn search redirects remain.
Attaching log files as per "Boopme".
Thanks again for your help! It is greatly appreciated!

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thank you Myrti for your response.
I greatly appreciate your help.
Yes, I am still experiencing the search redirects. Very frustrating. Clicking on any search results (google, bing, yahoo) in either Firefox or IE lead to bogus results pages.
Here are the files from the OTL scan, and again thank you for your help!

Hi,

please run a scan with ComboFix next:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Ok . . I am now using my laptop to reply because my desktop is locked up!
downloaded Combofix to desktop.
I turned off all antivirus and protection as per the instructions.
Double-clicked combofix.
It stated it could not run the scan because I had two real time scanners running??
It listed "Antivirus Verizon Yahoo Online" and "Antivir Desktop"?
Avira showed that it was OFF.
I also have Teatimer and had followed the steps to turn it off (before installing combofix) and had turned it off from the startup. I have no idea what the Verizon Yahoo Online is. I had Verizon Yahoo years ago free with free protection but that was maybe two years ago? I couldn't find anything in my task mgr for Verizon or Yahoo (we are now Frontier) and couldn't find anything in my programs for it either.
I did find Avira in my task mgr but when I tried to end the task I got the message "access denied"?? I am the admin and signed in as admin so I have no idea why I wouldn't be allowed access!
I then went into "services" and stopped it there and no longer in task mgr.

So I tried to continue with the combofix install. STILL gave me the same message about Verizon Yahoo Online and Antivir Deskop. I clicked Ok to let it scan anyway.
It stated I either needed to install or update Windows Recovery. I was sure I already had it so maybe it needed to update? It eventually scanned my desktop computer, took about 10-15 mins.

The logfile popped up at the end . . but suddenly my mouse did not work. I could not use the mouse OR my keyboard. Tried everything I could think of but the logfile just sat there on the screen. I couldn't shut down the computer. It eventually went into sleep mode. When it restarted (by pushing the power button)I STILL could not use the mouse or keyboard. I also noticed that the only thing showing in the task bar at the bottom right of my screen was a red shield with an x in it. And I noticed that Combofix was no longer on my desktop! The download file was gone.
I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. Tried changing batteries, and even unplugging and plugging back in the reciever . . no help.
I eventually shut down by pushing the power button and restarted the same way. I tried to go into safe mode but hitting f8 repeatedly did not do anything. Keyboard and mouse are dead. Computer boots up to my usual desktop only without the combofix download and with the red shield in the task bar.
I just tried to use the same wireless mouse and keyboard with my laptop and THEY WORK!!
AAAAAaarrrggg!!!
What is going on with my desktop computer??

Hi,

do you have an alternate keyboard that you could try to use? When did you download ComboFix, there was one release yesterday that contained a bug, I'm afraid that's what we may be facing here.. We'll be able to fix it, it might just take a moment.

Downloaded Combofix late late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Not really sure. I was up till 3:00am running the scan so I am guessing I downloaded it early Thursday.
I am scrabbling to find another keyboard. I know I had the old plug in keyboard around here somewhere but may have to run to town and buy one. I am also trying to get one to borrow but so far no luck.
Will post as soon as I have another keyboard.

Hi,

do you have a live-cd of some sort? If not do you have your Windows CD available so that we can create a live-cd?

Do you by chacne remember seeing what ComboFix deleted during its run?

Ok, daughter brought me a usb keyboard.
My cd/dvd drives (two drives, one is a writable) both open and take a disc but then just hum for a moment and do nothing. Nothing pops up on the screen, no plug and play, no contents of disc. They let me open the tray and take out the disc.
No I do not have a windows cd. My desktop came "preloaded" with the software.
I DID make recovery discs when I set up the desktop. I have "Compaq Recovery Disk 1 of 2" and "2 of 2" both dated 2/11/2007.
I also have "PC Doctor Bootable Diagnostic CD" dated 2/11/2007, also "CDRW Boot Disc for update sp26847" dated 7/5/2007.
I don't know if any of those are what we need.
And as far as what Combofix deleted . . . I was amazed at how much it deleted but cannot remember any of them. I thought it rebuilt the correct files because the others were corrupt in some way. I didn't really question it at the time. I couldn't do anything with the logfile remember, my mouse and keyboard were not working so I couldn't copy and paste OR print it.
I am scared I am going to lose all my info and programs on the desktop, it is my MAIN computer.
So glad you are helping me out of this mess!
THANK YOU.

Oh great . . if YOU are lost then I am totally screwed. :)

Yes the keyboard worked. Hitting f8 repeatedly got me the safe mode, etc menu. I choose safe mode with networking.
It then brought me up to the windows log-in screen. And without a MOUSE I couldn't click on my name! The keyboard had no effect on the little mouse pointer. I should have gotten a mouse along with the keyboard . . duh.

So now awaiting further instructions.

Hi,

you should be able to use the tab-key to jump through different elements on the logging screen and activate the area where you need to enter the password. You can thenenter and confirm the password to login.

It is theoretically possible to use a PC just with a keyboard (and I could walk you through it) but if someone has a mouse handy that may be a better alternative.

The tab key does not work. I could NOT jump around with the tab key on the windows log in screen.

The steps I took were: I got to the safe mode menu with repeatedly pushing the f8 key on start up. I choose safe mode with networking from all the available choices, then windows xp media center. I believe windows recovery was one of the options but since you have not told me what choice to use I simply tried the safe mode with networking. The windows log in screen appears next.
On the windows log in screen the keyboard suddenly does not work. Tried tab key repeatedly and nothing happens. None of the keys work. The mouse cursor is stuck and won't move and the key board has no affect on the screen.
Should I be trying to use something other than safe mode with networking? I noticed a command prompt option, or maybe windows recovery or last known good configuration? I am totally confused by all the choices.
I have no clue why the new usb keyboard would work during start up but not for the windows log in screen. I still do not have a mouse. As a last resort I will have to go and buy a new one if absolutely needed.
Regards,
Ramona

Hi Ramona,

I'd rather try a different avenue, do you have a live-cd of some sort? It's like an operating system that runs from the CD.

No I do not think I have a "live-cd".
The discs I do have I listed in a previous post.
Thanks,
Ramona
