Helllo,

Not sure if I am in the right section, but I have a strange problem. I have some user that are having the connection to their shared drive go out every couple of hours. It goes out for about 30 seconds, and then comes back up. I am running a windows server 2003 environment with two DCs. I only have one switch between the computers and the servers. I was able to check it for connectivity problems and it reported no errors. I am really stumped on this one. Has anyone every experienced something like this before. I know this is rather vague, but hopefully with some questions we can get somewhere. Thanks.

How is your DHCP being handled? By the 2003 servers or a seperate hardware router?

DHCP is handled by the servers.

Most of the time I have seen this it occurs when shares are mapped by name and either the DHCP is served on a router or the automatically register in DNS setting is not turned on. What OS are the clients running? Since it seems to be happening on a schedule then I would start by looking at what other items are happening on that schedule. Things like replication, DNS transfers, WSUS Update pushes, or anything else happening on the server hosting the shares. Speaking of which are the shares on only the one server or both? Are all users having this problem? Are they all have it at the same time? Is it always the same clients effected?

The shares are mapped via a VBs script which uses the net use command to map the shared drive. None of the DCs contain any files, so all of the shared resources reside on a separate file server. The clients are all running windows XP professional, and the same thing happens to each machine at the same time. As far as I can see WSUS does not run until later in the day, so I think we can rule that one out. Are you referring to the automatically register DNS setting withing the windows DHCP server? Thanks.

Yes I am refering to the automatically register DNS setting with the DHCP server. Sometimes because of the DHCP server renewing the lease on the client seems to disrupt the mapping if the DHCP and the DNS aren't on the same wavelength. Something about the small delay in the DHCP renew process can lead to DNS name resolution issues with drive mappings when either of those two items aren't in place. So the files are on a member server which is also running Server 2003? Are there any other Server roles in place on the server that is hosting the shares? Is the member server is assigned a static IP or dynamic? Sorry for the twenty questions but I try not to assume anything when trying to wrap my mind around an issue.

totally understand about all the questions, how else would you be able to help. The servers only role is to share files. I did notice that there was an old DNS server in the mix after running a netdiag /test:dns Although I don't think that's the issue as that server has been decommissioned, and dns server role has been removed. I will look at this. I also started sniffing some packets this morning. Hopefully I will have som better news.

Ok disregard that last post on DNS I have resolved that issue. The only errors that I can see in the even viewer on the files server are Event ID 1053 Source Userenv.

Looking at that error code it is either name resolution or group policy related. Technet link here: Event ID 1053

Does the time of the event log coinside with the time of the outages? Have you had the issue since you resolved the DNS problem?

Sorry for the late reply, but I was able to fix the issue. As it turns out one of the ports of my dual nic card was actually causing a conflict with the other one next to it. So I disabled the one and left the other, and its been stable ever since. Strange problem never ran into that one yet. Hope this helps someone.
