I think my system has a rootkit or virus. Yesterday (March 31) around 7pm my Internet Explorer popped up additional windows and it took a while to get them to close. Since then my search engine results (Google, Bing) redirect to other sites when I try to click on them. I've gotten 3 additional symptoms of this problem:
- shortly after starting IE, my computer speaakers will play commercials (audio-only), even when the only application I have open is one Internet Explorer window and it's on a simple page like Google's home page.
- I get periodic warning windows titled "Internet Explorer Script Error" even when the only application running is IE and it's sitting idly on Google or Bing or another site. The rest of the window says:
"An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Line: 96
Char: 3
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method
Code: 0
URL: http://es.optimost.com/es/554/c/8/u/live.js
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?"
The URL's are different each time (so are the Line #s), some other URL examples:
URL: http://pluckit.demandmedia.com/
URL: http://www.westwood.edu/
URL: http://blogncaabball.smacchat.com/
URL: http://www.gametrailers.com/neo/js/NeoPlayer.js?0825002
- the final symptom so far is my taskbar has popped up a window with this message:
"Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet...."
The popup disappears before I can type the rest of the file location & name.
I had a similar problem once before, and fixed it by running TDSSKiller and a number of other virus and spyware fix tools. This time, when I try to run TDSSKiller, nothing happens (it won't open / won't run). I tried changing the name from "tdsskiller.exe" to "xyz123.com" but it still won't execute.
The next thing I tried was System Restore, to see if I could restore my system backwards one day (to before I started having the redirects & other problems). But this resulted in several errors, and most of my Start menu items had disappeared(!), so I had to undo the restore, which I was able to do (but still have all the symptoms described above).
My system usually runs pretty clean. Not much is running, and the processes with the highest Memory Usage in the Windows Task Manager are usually around 30k (except iexplore.exe can be higher, and wuauclt.exe can be high when it's looking for new updates I think). In the past day (since this problem started), I noticed explorer.exe is running with unusually high Memory Usage (85k+).
I've followed the steps in topic34773 (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html). I also ran HiJackThis and have a log file for that if you want to see it. Please help! Thanks!
I've pasted my DDS.txt file below (and I've attached the Attach.txt file):
