My situation began shortly after I arrived at my new assignment in China. I am using a 1 year old Toshiba NB205 laptop running XP home and AVG. I use Firefox and Yahoo mail. I have two search bars at the top of my screen. One large, one short(on the right). If I search through the bar on the right I get a "normal" search result. Problem, if I use the main search bar space I get a Chinese Yahoo search result that always contains "one.cn.yahoo.com". All these searches seem to be redirected or hijacked by some Chinese host.
How do I get out from under this redirection?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Sounds to me like you are infected.
First step would be download, install, update and run MalwareBytes AntiMalware.
Do the full scan.
It could take a while so check on it every once in a while until it completes & remove everything that it finds.
If that doesnt clear it up let us know so that we can get you over to our Malware folks.
In the beginning there was the command line.
