computer unattended for a while screen goes black

Hello, the screen on my computer goes black if left unattended for a while. it is not the monitor because the mouse still works. When i reboot via the power switch all returns fine.

also the network connection ceases to work after a while. at first i could disable the connection and then enable it and it worked fine but now if I do that I get an arp cache error when trying to re-enable the network

Forgive an obvious question, but have you checked the settings in power options? Also, what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
