So I was having a problem where every time AVG ran a scan or updated it froze my computer. That problem was kinda resolved in this post: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic384620.html/page__p__2166465__fromsearch__1#entry2166465 . I resolved it by *trying* to uninstall AVG and installing Avast instead. The uninstallation of AVG goes smoothly until it asks me to restart my computer. Upon restarting I get an error message immediately after windows boots (even before the task bar and desk top icons appear.) The message says there is a missing file. The file name is really long and the command window is open behind the warning. I continue with the windows boot and AVG is still running though the resident shield, anti-virus, and anti-spyware components have either failed or are inactive so at least my computer isn't freezing. I am running windows XP SP3 5.1 and AVG 10.0 Free.

THanks in advance for your help

Hi,

maybe try their uninstaller in that case:

  • Download the latest installation file of AVG from their website
  • After downloading, run teh file and choose the Uninstall Product option in the Select Setup Type dialogue
  • Finish the uninstallation process and restart your computer

If this fails as well, you can try to use AVGremover:

  • Download avgremover.exe and save it to your Desktop
  • Run the file avgremover.exe
  • Confirm that you want to uninstall.
  • Wait until the program confirms the removal
  • Restart your computer
