Posted 30 March 2011 - 01:34 PM

I received a laptop from one of my coworkers, she was infected quite a bit with a few different viruses and fake anti-virus programs. I believe there is still a rootkit in there because I am still getting redirects with google searches. Also I can only update Microsoft Security Essentials through a manual update. If I try to update it through the program then it won't connect. I have run malwarebytes and removed a bunch of things from the laptop, my most recent run of it has returned 0 infections. There is obviously something still in there and I'm not really familiar with Combofix or how to remove a rootkit if it is that. I'd greatly appreciate any help, thanks. Here is the DDS log and attached are the attach.txt and ark.txt

  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.

I am having random problems with starting and restarting the machine. This just started. Sometimes it will bring up the wallpaper but won't bring up any icons or start menu. You can bring up Task Manager with CTRL-ALT-DEL and also push the power button to bring up Logoff, Shutdown and Restart. Anyway here are the logs you requested.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I had zero problems running Combofix.
Microsoft Security Essentials will update now, so that is fixed. Firefox is not having any redirecting problems that I can tell, I tried a few websites that it used to redirect on and its fine. I am getting a problem with internet explorer, anytime I try to close it out it comes up with a "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...etc". The error report uses the code: 0x0000005 and references the file d98e_appcompat.txt in the temp folder. The file it references does change the d98e part, each time its something different.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\windows\Djekocinexilahe.bin

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?
