Running Win XP SP2 on 700 mghz IBM notebook with 192 mb ram.

Have AVG anti-virus, ZoneAlarm firewall, update and run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D regularly, use System Mechanic to clean up.

Have also run Housecall and PandaSoft online scans.

Recently the computer takes 5 minutes to boot up and then when the desktop finally appears it takes another 5 minutes before a program opens after clicking on the icon.

Ctrl/Alt/Del to get Task Manager sometimes shows 100% usage!! Seems like something is always running.

Could this be caused by a trojan?

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Chances are that, if you have used all the applications you have mentioned to scan your hard drive, the problem may have been caused by something other than a virus or a trojan.
Have you, for example, installed any new applications/updates recently?
Have you checked to see what applications launch on start-up that may not be needed?
Regards,
John

Yes it could. But it could be caused by other programs as well, or defective hardware also, however usually this is an indication of a software problem.

When you Ctrl + Alt + Del to get the Task Manager and see 100% CPU usage, click on the Processes tab and see what processes are taxing the CPU so. Let us know what the culprit is.
