Good evening. :)

Download aswMBR.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • Click the Scan button to, well, start the scan - obvious really!
  • Once the scan reports "Scan finished successfully", which takes less than a minute on my system, click Save log.
  • On my system it offers to save it to the Desktop, which may or may not be it's default behaviour, but it's as handy a place as any.
  • You'll also see a file called MBR.dat appear as well - this is a backup that it created, just in case it's needed. Keep it handy for now.

I'd like the contents of aswMBR.txt in your next reply, if you'd be so kind.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Thanks for the reply. One other thing that I forgot to mention in my original post is that Windows Firewall could not be started. May or may not be relevant. Here is the log you requested:

Good evening. :)

One other thing that I forgot to mention in my original post is that Windows Firewall could not be started. May or may not be relevant.

You'll be replacing that shortly as it's not really up to the task, but it will keep for now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Download MBRBackup by Mischel Internet Security from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • Click Save MBR... at the top left.
  • Navigate to Windows (C:) and save the file there, keeping the default filename.
  • Close the window and then confirm that the file MBR_date.bin has been successfully created - if not, try again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Run aswMBR.exe and Scan again.
Once that completes you should see the Fix button become active - the text on it will turn from grey to black.
Give the Fix button a click and let it do it's thing.
Once complete, click the Save log button and save the log as before.
Finally, reboot the PC.

I'd like the log in your next reply and tell me if the PC is behaving itself now.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

As there has been no response for five days this thread is now closed.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
