Posted 27 March 2011 - 06:27 PM

I replied to a spam email from a friend telling him he was infected. The subject was something like "Rocky, this is the best financial decision I ever made". I thought I was safe to do this because I use McAfee Security Center, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Ad-Aware and a firewall. My PC is now sending out similar emails, to everyone in my contacts, stating things like "I have a way to reach financial security" and "best career decision I ever made" in the subject line. I believe 3 have sent since Tues. or Wed. None of my antivirus/ malware software can detect/remove it. I performed a "restore" to March 12, before the infection, to no avail. Sorry I cannot give you more info regarding the infection. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated and I thank you and the other volunteers for this invaluable resource and most of all their time. Sincerely, Rocky.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hello Myrti,

Thank you so much for replying to my post. I just went through a clean reinstall last November/December and would really love to avoid doing again if possible. This is a Dell E310 that came with Windows pre-installed - no CDs/DVDs were provided.

To recap I contracted a virus by "replying to sender" an email from a friend that seemed a little suspisious. I wanted to let him know he might be infected, he later stated he did not send it. I felt safe doing this due to my firewall and anti-malware programs. My computer seems to be running ok (maybe a little slower), but is now sending out the same spam emails, I received, to everyone in my contacts. When noticed, I ran Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware and McAfee, but they found nothing. I then tried a system restore to March 12 (before the infection), but another batch of spam emails went out the following day. Since making my post, March 27, I don't believe any spam emails have been sent out - I usually receive some undeliverable email notices and freinds/family let me know. I contacted the freind who I received the infection from originally, he stated he took no action and didn't know the name of the infection. I have not received any spam emails from him in approximately 2 weeks. I have not done/ran anything to resolve this since posting my request.

I can't thank you enough for your assistance - Rocky

Hi,

please run a scan with ComboFix next:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Good morning Myrti,

I ran ComboFix late last night and saw this info in the log "Completion time: 2011-04-06 01:26:47 - machine was rebooted". I woke this AM to find more "email failure notices" in my inbox. The time the failure notices arrived were 1:25 AM this morning.

I hope this log tells us something - thank you.

Rocky

Hi,

there's a time delay betwen the "delivery failure" and the email you sent to that address. Can you open the delivery failure and check when the mail that failed to get delivered was actually sent?

Have you changed your password since you started sending out those emails?

The spam email was actually sent at 1:25 AM - same time as the failure delivery notices. I checked several sources - friends, relatives and failure messages.

This last spam email just had "rjalten" as a subject and only had a link in the text. Some of the links were www.sevillamegalitica.com/prs5.html, www.heifner.net/prs5.html and www.spacoquality.com.br/prs5.html.

I changed my email password this AM. Hope this helps and thank you for your continued support - Rocky

Hello Myrti,

There hasn't been any activity this afternoon/night, but 1 1/2 or 2 weeks went by without activity until the latest emails at 1:25 this AM - so it's not uncommon. Thanks you - Rock

Hm, waiting a week is kinda long.

I'd rather run another scan to check for possible infections:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

When did you initially change your password?

Hello Myrti,

I changed my email password around 10 AM this morning. I haven't changed it since the infection - I didn't think of it. I've used Macs exclusively for 20+ years and am relatively new/ignorant to PCs and malware.

No viruses found in the latest scan. Thanks again - Rock

Hi,

yeh, changing passwords is a good first reflex to have. But you need to do it from a clean PC obviously.

Your logs look clean to me, have you sent out any more spam mails recently?

Good morning Myrti,

No, not since yesterday at 1:25AM, but that is common for this infection as it went 1 1/2 weeks between mailings before. I don't believe I'm clean, as an updated version of Malwarebyte, Adaware and McAfee could not identify the infection when I first noticed it, and considering the time stamps of the latest email and the ComboFix log.

Is a complete reinstall my only option at this point, or can you think of something else to try? Thank you again for all of your time and effort. Rock

Hi,

I could imagine tha the restore disabled the infection and that is why it's not getting picked up. The tools all are focused on active infections, not inactive leftovers.

We could run a scan with Eset too:

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

If that doesn't find anything, I think we have basically covered what we can do via forum.

Hi Myrti,

The ESET scan found no threats. Looks like I'll have to do a clean reinstall. Is there anything I need to do before/during clean reinstall to make sure I'm starting "clean"?

Thank you soooo much for your time and help and to all the wonderful people at BC - Rock
