My budget for the new computer is: Approximately $1000.

What are the primary uses for this computer (IE: mail, web browsing, programming, games, etc)? E-mail, web browsing, finances, light gaming and media.

What software do you intend on using on the computer? Microsoft Office products, media players, Quicken, some lower end games

Do you play games? If so, what type of games? Very rarely. Low system requirements.

Do you tend to have a lot of programs running at the same time, or do you close every program when you are done using it? Usually programs are closed out before a new one is opened.

Do you store a lot of pictures or music on the computer? No. Most data is stored on an external hard drive.

Upgrading from a Dell Inspiron 1501 with 2GB RAM. Not sure on the processor speed. Would like an overall faster laptop.

Easily the best around or are there comparable ones? It's not for me, it's for my mother and I know she'll ask that.

There are comparable ones. If you are looking for pure speed, high end graphics and a large screen then this ticks all the boxes. This model would come second for does thing i mentioned.

Okay. Thank you. We'll review the options and figure out what's best for her. I appreciate the suggestions.
