I recently got infected with the defender.exe malware. After reading yours and several other forums I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran a scan which I believe eliminated the malware. I also ran Spybot and McAfee which I run on my computer periodically. I've used Highjack This to capture a log and would like one of your resident experts to review this and verify that my computer is clean. Thanks.

Good evening. :)

Pay a visit to the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 - I.E. is preferred for this scan.
  • Read the Information panel and then click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Both the anti-virus engine and database will need to be downloaded, which may take a little time.
  • Once this has been completed, select My Computer from the Scan section on the left hand side.
  • Put the kettle on!
  • Although it is recommended by Kaspersky that you should disable your anti-virus scanner before starting this scan, it should work OK with it still active - it does on my PC.
    Although you may find the scan speed increases if you carry out this step, I never like to disable my resident scanner while online, so I don't.
  • When the scan has completed, click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save and pick a location for the file - the Desktop is always handy.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh DDs log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Link does not work.

Goes to online scanner page. Program downloads. Database starts downloading but after some time error message pops up saying to go directly to kaspersky.com.

Good evening. :)

Pay a visit to the ESET Online Scanner.

  • Click the ESET Online Scanner button and a new window will open - you may need to maximise it.
  • Click the Run ESET Online Scanner button in the new window.
  • If you are using any other browser than IE, you will be prompted to download and run esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and the scan will run from within the window that the executable opens.
  • Regardless of which browser you are using, you will be shown some terms and conditions and you will need to accept these to continue.
  • If you are running IE for this scan you will then be prompted to allow an ActiveX component to be downloaded, unless you already have it installed, and the scan will run inside IE.
  • When you see the Computer Scan Settings window, you will need to make the following changes:

    • UNCHECK Remove found threats - this is important.
    • Check Scan archives
    • Click on Advanced settings
    • Check Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Once ready, click Start to begin - not a surprise really!
  • The anti-virus definitions will now be downloaded, so don't forget to allow them through your firewall if prompted.
  • The above will take a little time, so now is a good time to fire up the kettle and open the biccies.
  • Once the scan has completed you will be shown the results - assuming that the scanner has found anything.
  • Click List of found threats and then Export to text file... and save the log somewhere convenient.
  • You can then close out the scanner - don't bother uninstalling it as you may need to use it again.
  • Please post the contents of this file in your next reply, or let me know that nothing was identified.

Will you also throw in a fresh DDS log and let me know how the PC is behaving.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Went to Kaspersky.com and downloaded KAV2011 anti-virus. Ran the scan. Captured the scan report (attached). Did the cleanups recommended. Captured another report. And ran DDS. Reports captured.

Will run ESET scanner next.

Are you seeing something in the log files that's prompting you to recommend these additional scans?

Good evening. :)

It wasn't my intention that you downloaded and installed Kav, simply run their online scan. As you reported that Kav wasn't accessible I went with ESET as an alternative.

If you haven't already run the ESET online scan, skip it. The logs don't show anything nasty that I can see and assuming that your PC is playing nicely, i'd say you were good to go.

Should you wish to switch anti-virus programs to a freebie, I have a few that I can offer you, or you can keep Kav or go back to McAfee as you see fit.

You'll also need a firewall, if you don't already have one. While the SP2 firewall is better than nothing, it doesn't monitor outgoing traffic, so anything malicious on your computer can 'phone home' at will. If you are using a wireless router that comes with a NAT hardware firewall, this also doesn't monitor outgoing connections.
If you want, I can let you have links to freebies for this task too.

You have some leftovers of a previous version of Sun Java on your system that need removing.

Download JavaRa from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s):

Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click JavaRa.exe to begin.
  • Pick your preferred language from the drop-down menu and click Select.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older version of Java - obvious really, isn't it!
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location, just in case you have any problems with Java afterwards.

Your copy of Adobe Reader is out of date. You can get the latest version here, feel free to uncheck the McAfee download first, or you can update from within the program itself: Help > Check for Updates...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:
Create a new Restore Point with a memorable name - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future. If you use a Restore Point from before this point you may reinstall any infection that was present at the time, so only do so if using this latest one doesn't solve any issues.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.
Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet. It's a little old, but still contains some good ideas.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Thanks for all your help. I started the Eset scan this morning. Results are attached.
The computer seems to running ok but to be honest I haven't done much with it other than to run scans. I'll put it to work this week and see how things go.
Thanks for all your help.
As this issue appears to have been resolved, this thread is now closed.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
