Please help me with the following:

I was trying to get to the bottom of the 'Windows Vista error 80070005' error which is stopping me update from Windows Update. I tried all the possible fixes including installing subinacl.exe and resetting permissions, activating hidden Administrator account and renaming software distribution folder etc....Nothing was working!

Having read numerous times that the 80070005 error was due to permissions, I wondered if the firewall was next to blame as I had already tried with the inbuilt Admin account which should've given me the highest rights available to the machine (BTW - machine is not networked locally so no Server initiated Group Policies). I turned off windows firewall and retried. Still nothing. When I then entered the 'Vista Security Centre' it claimed that a firewall was turned on. Clicking on the down arrow next to Firewall and then "show me which firewalls are installed", I found an unknown firewall as in the pic below...

I've looked to uninstall anything that looks even similar to a firewall or security program, but nothing is installed except AVG which doesn't have a firewall.

Here is a HJT log from the machine:

Hello ,
And :welcome: to the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum
. My name is Elise and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.
You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications. The topics you are tracking are shown here.
-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.
We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.

It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Click on Cancel, then Accept.

-------------------------------------------------------------
In the meantime please, do NOT install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem

If you still need help, please include the following in your next reply

Hello again, I do not see any firewall registered with the security center. Lets see if we can find out more about this problem.

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise.

I was forced to uninstall AVG in order to run Combofix, but I've since installed again after running Combofix...here are the results:

Hi, at this point, does the unknown firewall still show up. And besides that, what other problems do you still have?

regards, Elise

Hi Elise.

Thanks again for such a prompt reply.

The unknown firewall still shows and it reports that it is the current malware scanner too. Also, windows Vista still reports error code 80070005 when trying to use windows update.

Thanks,

Ben

Regarding the screenshot in your first post, have you tried highlighting the second firewall and clicking Turn Off?

regards, Elise

Hi Elise.

Yes, I have tried to turn it off. When I highlight it the 'Turn off' and 'Update' buttons stay grayed out and nothing happens if I 'Right click' it.

Thanks,

Ben.

First of all, it looks like you have some Norton leftovers. Please run the following and then let me know if the firewall still shows up.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions in STEP 2 to download and run the norton removal tool.

HI Elise.

I've run Norton Removal program...Firewall still shows up and entries from combofix -

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000001
.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000001

are still there too.

My sister, who's machine this is, tells me that she remembers now a while back she clicked on something from facebook which uninstalled AVG and installed Norton. She didn't like Norton, so uninstalled it via the control panel and re-installed AVG.....could this have something to do with the problem, perhaps?

Many thanks,

Ben.

PS. Re: the above - Maybe the "Norton" she installed wasn't even Norton at all, but something made to look like Norton?

Hi Elise.

I looked again at the updates and found that there were more updates waiting to install. I unchecked the update that had originally caused the update error and checked the rest. Now I find that 3 of 14 updates were successful. This leads me to believe that there is no firewall issue. I am now getting a new error code "80070490" from the failed updates.

I'm not sure if this helps?

Thanks,

Ben.

To me the firewall entry looks not malicious so far, more like Unicode characters that are not correctly displayed. I wonder if it has anything to do with your Sony Wireless Switch Setting Utility.

Please see the steps here for your update error: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-vista/Windows-Update-error-80070490

Did that fix the issue (if you don't have the Vista DVD, restart your computer and tap F8, see if you have the Repair Windows option).

regards, Elise

Hi Elise.

Several updates have now installed, but not all. After the last reboot, the original "Windows cannot search for updates" error has returned. Error code 80070005.

She does not have the original disk (bundled with software from Sony), so after looking up the 80070490 error, I found that "Windows Update Readiness Tool" might help...it is running now, but perhaps too late?

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben, did you also try the F8 option? Was Repair Windows an option?

regards, Elise
