Encrypt Data on External Drive

Hello all,

I have a 1 TB Western Digital external drive. What is the best way to safegaurd the data on this drive in case it fell into the wrong hands? No need to protect against an expert hacker. Freeware would be good but i don't mind spending $30-$40.
