hello, i was looking into upgrading my computer, i picked out a amazing processor only to find out how outdated my computer really was lol. my motherboard is a http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006272R/4006272Rsp2.shtml and the processor that i want to put in it (not the amazing one but a heck of a upgrade) is a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103920 and it says the motherboard supports athlon but not about the AMD Athlon II X3 idk if there is a difference between the two or if they are just using it to avoid posting every single cpu. if this does fit it will save me a few hundred bucks lol, many thanks in advance!

That will not work because the processor you want to buy is a AM3 socket whereas your one is a AM2+.

The best place to see if your motherboard supports a CPU is the manufactures website. Please go there.

Some AM3 CPUs will work in am2/am2+ Sockets, in most cases that I have seen though, the only models that are supported are the 95 watt CPUs and definetly not the black edition CPUs, and usually with a BIOS update, and if the OEM manufacturer didnt release a BIOS update that will support it you are out of luck. I see you found the answer, and thats great, I'm Just putting this out for future reference.
