Hi,
My friend brought me her HP laptop a few weeks ago because it had a virus. I saw Security Suite stuff pop up all over, and you couldn't run ANYTHNG, so I used the instructions on this site to get rid of it. I thought it was gone but she brought her computer back to me a couple of weeks ago because she was getting popups again. Btw, she actually paid the security suite site thingy 80$. I'm having her go through the steps to get her money back for that now.
So I rescanned with AVG and malwarebytes and it didn't come up with anything. I kept the computer for a few days and used it like normal but got no popups so I gave it back to her. So about a week ago she gave me back the computer as the IE would not work. So I scanned it again and both malwarebytes and AVG came up with a couple of things and got rid of them.
So now I'd like to see if the computer really is clean.
Also, I'd like to know what she needs on here to keep the computer clean?? She scans with both AVG and malwarebytes but I'm not sure that is enough if she keeps thinking she's getting infected. I know she does a lot of facebook apps.

Also, this computer absolutely refuses to scan gmer. The first time I downloaded and ran it it scanned for about an hour then spontaneiously the computer shut down. I didn't see any messages because I wasn't paying attention to it when it shut down. So the next day (today) I tried to scan again and it stopped very close to the beginning of scanning and put up a blue screen that said "The computer is shutting down to protect windows" Then a whole screen of stuff I didn't have time to read, but at the bottom it said "Crash Dump".
So, not sure how to get that log to you. I've deleted it all and redownloaded and re unzipped a couple of times. Still won't scan. Tried once in safemode too. Same problem.

Appreciate any and all help. Thanks so much!! I've used this site several times of the years an all of the volunteers are invaluble!!
Thanks again,
Mastifflvr28

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hi mastifflvr28,

How are you doing this morning?

Thank so much for chccking out my scans! Computer seems to be the same. Haven't seen any pop ups yet. Kinda worried that it wouldn't run gmer the other day and gave me that blue dump screen...

You're very welcome! I would not worry to much about GMER not running on your system. It does not always run properly on some systems.

OTL Fix

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

GRRRR, this computer is driving me NUTS!
So everytime I run a scan it either gives me error messages or shuts down my IE (specially after I type out a long post BEFORE I send it).

Ok, so after I ran the OTL fix it seemed like the computer locked up in the middle. It gave me a message "Windows stopped working correctly" and a bunch of other stuff I missed. Then it's "fix" suggestion was to update windows.
So I just restarted the computer and the OTL fix log came up ok, so I'm pasting that here.
Then I typed the above message (sorta) and then ran combofix. I did disable AVG 9 but then combofix wanted it uninstalled. So I uninstalled AVG and ran combofix. So then combofix shut down my IE so I lost my above message the first time around.
SOOOO...I've pasted my logs below.

I will wait on re installing AVG until you say it is ok.

I also did not update windows yet because I didn't want the computer to change in the middle of all these scans.

Thanks again ST

PS -- Double GRRRRR...When I went to hit POST after pasting my logs here, I got a bleeping computer database error and had to shut IE down again. Luckily I was able to copy my above post before it all fell apart again. I think this computer is fighting getting fixed...possibly possessed.
:)

mastifflvr28,

How are you doing today?

We will worry about updating Windows a little bit later.

You can just hold off on re-installing AVG for right now.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

I see that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer could you please do a scan using these settings:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click on Scan
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results
  • Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

NEXT:

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan

Note: It is recommended to disable on-board anti-virus program and anti-spyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.

Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your anti-virus along with your anti-spyware programs.

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked
  • When the Computer scan settings display shows, click the Advanced option, the place a check next to the following (if it is not already checked):
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as
ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.

Hi ST,
I have had no problems with this computer at all except for the shutting down during scans etc.
Also, is there a virus or something that will make the keyboard not work like normal? I'm typing just fine now, but in my last 2 replies I've had to hit the keys harder and repeatedly to make them work. I can't tell if that is a keyboard issue or if this computer is infected with something weird.
BTW...were there any virus's or mallware on it?

I put sp2 on it but have not done the windows update yet, will wait for your ok till I do that.

Here are my logs:

Hi mastifflvr28,

Also, is there a virus or something that will make the keyboard not work like normal? I'm typing just fine now, but in my last 2 replies I've had to hit the keys harder and repeatedly to make them work. I can't tell if that is a keyboard issue or if this computer is infected with something weird.

It's actually Casper the Friendly ghost that is making your keyboard not work properly. :P

In all seriousness, I think it may be a keyboard issue.

BTW...were there any virus's or mallware on it?

Yes, some minor malware, and then some Java infected files.

Is your Internet Service Provider AOL?

Also some of the issues could be related to some of the programs you have installed.

I'll provide the list of what ones to remove in my next post.

Hey ST,

This is a friend's computer and their ISP is not AOL.
Also, I know they do a lot of facebook Apps and God knows what all crap they downloaded.
I did clean off a lot of stuff I "KNEW" should be gone a couple weeks ago.

Again, thanks for the time and effort.
Appreciate it
Michelle

Michelle,

Okay, I am going to suggest that you remove these programs from your friends computer:

SiteRanker
MarketResearch
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
Yontoo Layers Client 1.10.01
Crawler Smileys
AOL Mail and AIM Gadget
ALOT Toolbar
AOL Registration
AOL Toolbar
AOL Toolbar 5.0
Conduit Engine
MSN
My Screensaver
PageRage Toolbar
PartyPokerNet
Viewpoint Media Player

How are things running? What issues are you still experiencing with the computer?

Uninstalled all suggested.
No issues with computer except occasional lock ups. For example...locked up when I tried to uninstall the very first thing which was siteranker. Restarted and uninstalled the rest.

Ready for next step
