If you are using Windows Update...try it again.

Do you receive any error messages?

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Hello!!
I'm way out of my league here. Much smarter people are helping. I hope I'm not interfering .
My friend was having your problem. He used Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner and it fixed the problem.
I hope I haven't over stepped or commented on some thing that I shouldn't.
You can find the link here.
I use this program every 30 days to keep my PC tuned up. It will create a restore point so you can restore your PC back to before you used the scanner.

It is my understanding that Microsoft ended product support for OneCare in 2009.

I don't recall any differences since the last time it was working. I went on the windows update website because I haven't seen the windows update icon pop up in a while

If you look at the OneCare Community page you will find that the last blog entry refers to the IE7 Beta release. That makes me think that it has not been supported for quite some time.

Hello!! I don't know how to make myself understood any better. One Care has been discontinued. The Safety Scanner is still supported.
Maybe if you just read my posts better ,you would understand.Microsoft says they are going to continue supporting this in the future.
That's all I know. I use it and have no problems with it.What more can I say.
And it just keeps getting better, just like jburd says :hysterical:

Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner is not Beta for XP3;however I'm not sure how long it's been out of Beta???? I don;t wish to argue, but The Scanner is supported by Uncle Bill and is not in Beta!!
