virus attack

I hope someone can help me. I recently started having random windows open to various advertisng pages while on the internet. Figured I had some type of malware. I have run AVG and spybot and cleaned up everything they said to. Didn't help. Ran malwarebytes in safe mode. Said it removed 2 infected objects. Now when I reboot, all I have is my desktop wallpaper with no icons or start menu or toolbars, etc. I can only get to programs through the task manager except for explorer unless I reboot in safe mode in which case desktop icons including explorer appear. Any help would be appreciated.

I have XP operating system.
